Jan. 18th, 2015 02:06 am* An innocent teen with autism is facing ten years in prison because someone decided that as he was an African American in a hoodie waiting for a library to open, he was by definition suspicious and therefore had a gun and the police decided to repeatedly brutalize him as a result. * Glee 6.3: "Jagged Little Tapestry:"
1. The haunted Klaine duet... Ouch.
2. This episode made we want to smack Kurt upside the head, and I say that as someone who often identifies with the character, though not today. It was good to see Santana Call him out on his bullshit, and I loved her exiting under the "Get your shit together sign." I loved the death references in the call out as the Kurt/psychopomp thing has always worked for me.
3. Rachel and Kurt being two serious control freaks failing to cooperate. Of course.
4. Brittany's egg shirt was distracting and alarming in what was otherwise a good musical number.
5. I love Brittany. I love Brittany here. I love her being the voice of relationship wisdom to Kurt. I couldn't properly process the Brittany bit where she was decorating for Blaine and Karofsky because the textures pinged my brain so hard I stopped processing language. Why was they no bed? I caught the word bed in there, but I could either stare at that carpet and all the colors and textures in the room or process language. I'd not being sarcastic here, I could really use someone to tell me what the dialog was. Brittany and Kurt and textures.
6. I am wondering if the Mash up Klaine montage represents sense memory film strips like I get. (I am in the Kurt is not neurotypical camp).
7. Jane and the male incest twin were amazing together vocally. I knew Jane had the perfect Carol King song voice but put them together and Dayumn.
8. Wow, this is the only show I can think of that addresses sexual agency for a person with down syndrome head on. It was glorious to watch.
9. I was right about Beiste after all.
10. One of the things I loved about last season was that no one was all the way right or all the way wrong. I'm glad to see that continue with Kurt and Rachel. I kind of love their good cop/bad cop coaching thing if they can just learn to let go enough control to let the other do what they need to do.
* Penny Dreadful 1.2-3: Episode two really got my attention. Damn! I think the theme of the importance of naming and story in episodes 2 and three is really interesting.
1.4 "Demimonde:" And the theme of this one seems to be truth, illusion and their relationship to art. This show is speaking my language on so many levels for all it's flaws. The use of theater, the use of violence, Dorian with his perfume masks.... Damn. I am fascinated by the narrative ruthlessness of the show runners and the way violence and poetry interact. The visual and linguistic textures entrance. I am also impressed that for once they didn't straight wash Dorian Gray out of his bisexuality. I am concerned that they have whitewashed London generally and the only Poc character is foreign, a servant, and nearly silent. It needs to change. I know I shouldn't expect historical accuracy from something like penny dreadful, but London has been a multiracial city since the Roman Invasion and was particularly diverse in the Victorian era. It is weird to see all white background players and it makes me wonder about their racial agenda in general when you add in the near silent cipher as the only character of colour in the main cast.
