gwydion* So it turns out that the hospital administrators at the Dallas hospital were so callously incompetent they not only ignored standard ebola infection control procedures like the buddy system, but they had no procedures and training in place for people tending the first ebola patient. !!!! My feeling is, that if I as a lay person with no medical training and a casual interest in epidemics knew more about standard infection control procedures two years ago (before the latest ebola outbreak) than hospital administrators in charge of a hospital in a major city, maybe those people oughtn't be in charge of a hospital in a major city with an international airport. Just saying. Also, apparently the head nurse demanded they put him in isolation, but the Doctors blew her off in favour of making him wait in the common waiting room for hours after she tried to get them to take sensible precautions.
* Unfortunately all this incompetence and arrogance at the Doctor and above level seems to have lead to the infection of a second nurse with ebola.
* They are moving the second nurse in Dallas to the very competent hospital in Dallas with proper containment and a history of following CDC infection protocols. Unlike the Dallas hospital where she and her colleague were infected where they did not have any appropriate protocols, protective gear, or even waste removal. As far as I am concerned the behavior of Doctor and admin are criminal because seriously, if I as a reasonably educated lay person with no medical training knows more about what to do in an ebola outbreak than people in charge of a hospital, that is seriously fucked up. If nurse complaints about how Mr. Duncan was treated and the lack of even minimal attempts at infection control are true, some Doctors need to lose their licenses and face lawsuits and criminal charges. My heart goes out to all the heroic nurses who fought the good fight despite the arrogance and stupidity that seems to be par for the course in their higher ups.
I am angry because this is pretty 101 stuff and approximately 77 people are at risk and at least two people are going to go through something terrible and a good man has died because no one in authority in a hospital in Dallas knows how to do their job and they were too arrogant to listen to the head nurse, CDC, look a thing up, etc.. It's completely unacceptable.
* Straight white Cis Men need to grow up and stop expecting everything to be all about and for them and only about and for them. I am sick of the tantrums featuring rape and death threats being treated as an acceptable response to other people getting their stories included in games that are still primarily designed to cater specifically to them. Get over yourselves!
* My body is having one of it's mini-rebellions, hence my mostly being missing. I should have made birthday cake for tomorrow. (Birthday is actually the 18th, but people are here tomorrow). Instead, I wore myself out squeezing limes and lemons into juice.
