* My heart goes out to the protesters in Hong Kong. I am old enough to remember Tienanmen Square and my worry on behalf these brave protesters is more than I can bear. As of this writing it's mostly been tear gas and the like, but I see the drone footage and I think of tanks and air strikes and the fragility of humans armed only with umbrellas and their convictions. I want them to win so badly; I want them to survive. I have no faith that that will happen. I know my wishing them well does nothing and that all I can do is be a witness.

* They think the death toll for the Japanese volcano eruption is more like 45, but recovery efforts are suspended for fear of more eruptions.

* ISIL Shells have started landing in Turkey.

* Meanwhile, we are signing up for another ten years of War in Afghanistan without any debate.
