* Damnit! I missed Geek week!

* Yes, I heard about the DADT vote. Given how qualified it was, I'm not celebrating until I actually see it happen. I see the homophobes are out in force witrh the AiDS hysteria and gay=NAZI crap. I am confused as to how Hitler's army could have been all gay when they were rounding up gay folk for the camps in NAZI Germany. Our right wing terrifies me.

* When I lived in Corvallis, my friends were mostly a mixed group of military history geeks and ex armed forces types. In our group we had a Military intelligence guy, a couple marines, two navy guys, an infantryman, and a mine sweeper guy (served in the first gulf war). There were others in our extended contacts, of course. My Abe wasn't yet a soldier. The guys would hang out in my living room and we would discuss military history, politics, social issues, etc.. I refereed to this as The Salon (as in groups of artists and intellectuals meeting for discussion during the enlightenment). As a side note, I used to make them quiche a lot as I could whip up two quiches from scratch on the cheap when I got home from work out of random stuff I had in my fridge and be able to feed whoever turned up without fear of running out. (The secret is Parmesan in the crust and mixing the herbs right into the egg mixture). The men would pretend this wasn't actual quiche as "real men don't eat quiche," but boy did they eat a lot of it. *ahem* Our group was all Xers except for Louise the biochemist (the only woman of the group), and her partner, one of the ex-marines. He was a honorary xer, having been born just before the demographic cut off. Our consensus was, no mater what demographers said, if you were too young for you or your classmates to be threatened by the draft, you are Xer, not Boomer. This was back during the first blush of the end the gay ban in the military debate. everyone in our group, military or civilian thought the ban was crap except one and we talked him 'round with logic and evidence. Anecdotal, I know, but polling in armed forces from then 'til now tends to support it. X and Y military folk when asked privately mostly think letting folks serve openly is a good idea. It's mostly the Boomers in the officer class and fundie civilians doing the foot dragging.

* This being Memorial Weekend, I'd like to salute a true hero who died today: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_William_Finn

* Poor little Hector tried to wake me up this morning to watch Angel. Part of Hector being scary bright for an animal with a brain the size of a walnut, is that he's good at mapping behavior patterns. He knows that if I go to bed at the time I went to bed last night, I generally get up really early and putter around for four hours or so, so he tried to get me to do that. (This behavior saved my bacon more than once when I was teaching and the alarm didn't go). I wasn't angry; I just pet him calm. I did manage to get out of the house in time for errands, which was important. I got everything done errand wise that needed doing, though I have a pile of in the house crap that still needs doing. I even bought an extra shirt for the surgery. (I'd hoped to get two, but the selection sucked. This one was not great, but tolerable. I have two surgery friendly shirts in my closet, but they are long sleeved and rather dressy for sleeping in, but I'll take them too.) After the turning of the month, I'll go looking again and see if I can find something better but for now, I'm mostly tapped.

* BPAL and dragon cave dropped while I was gone. Of course.

I suppose it says something about me that Colin Farrel and Jake Gyllenhaal are way more my style than the extreme body builder in many of these.

* It still pleases me that in season five of Supernatural, they were calling themselves "Team Free Will."

* It does not please me that top baby names right now are Bella and Jakob. I do think it's interesting that it's Jakob, not Edward.

Whenever I hear a story like this, I remember the time some idiot kids tried to vandalize our dojo during a spar. Twenty really angry guys in gis poured out and chased them for blocks. It never happened again. *ahem*
