* Here follows the text of the email I sent to the Night Vale folks to alert them to the need for safe restrooms at the Venues where they are performing. Again, I do not blame the Night Vale folks at all for the assholery of the Neptune staff, but I feel they need to know about a potentially serious safety issue for their trans and gender non-conforming fans at their shows. This is something it generally doesn't occur to cis folks gay or not. I plan to send a less polite email to the Neptune shortly. If you have or in future experience a similar thing, I hope you write letters of complaint. This sort of thing is completely unacceptable.
I and my friends were at the first showing of the Night Vale Live Showing in Seattle last night. There was an elderly male usher gender policing androgynous presenting and trans folk going into the rest room. I do not blame your production for the Neptune staff, but given how many of your audience are trans or otherwise gender non-conforming, I thought you would want to know that the Neptune's staff was making your fans feel unsafe. I and my friend were stopped and hassled separately at different points in the evening and I can only assume he was stopping anyone who didn't look cis sexual and binary enough on their way into the rest room. While both my friend and I were irritated, it did not ruin our evening, but this can be incredibly scary and triggery for trans folk and it could ruin a person's ability to enjoy your performance or cause panic attacks or other extreme distress, especially coming out of the blue in what feels like a safe space.
Again, I do not blame any of your staff for failing to guess that a concert venue of Trans Friendly Seattle in the University district of all places would be staffed by assholes, as we live in the area and it didn't occur to us either. I merely write to alert you to a problem that you might want to take into account with future bookings. Also, given how safe and inclusive your show and your fandom makes people feel to express themselves, someone might want to check ahead of time with venues already booked for the tour to make sure the staff is providing your trans and gender non-conforming fans a safe place to pee.
