* I was not able to sleep and I had to pick up meds and perishables, so I gave in and went to see an early showing of Catching Fire. It was objectively long, but subjectively exactly the length it needed to be. The bits that were cut were reasonable choices and the bits that needed to be there all were. Yes, I cried: Copiously for District 11, a tear or three in a couple spots later on. The film does everything I wanted it to do.

However, the theater experience was not what it ought to have been. No, I'm not talking about the teenaged girls. It's their movie and their space, so their rules. You know what though? Every single girl I saw in that theater complex was well behaved and I saw groups of them being textbook polite to staff.

No, the asshole was the father of the able bodied family that insisted on sitting next to me in the handicapped row. He didn't have to be there: His wife and his oldest daughter were perfectly capable of guarding the tween. It's a lot of money to spend on a movie you are going to be an asshole through because you don't want to be there. He wouldn't sit the fuck still. He was up and down constantly the first third, passing back and forth in front of me each time so as to block my view. Then he took a nap, which was less irritating, even though the occasional snores and startling awake startled me each time. Then he got out his phone to text through the last third, which meant not only changing coloured light out of the corner of my eye being distracting, but the constant bloops from incoming texts. There are benches outside. He could have gone out into to the corridor to sit on them instead of distracting me and generally being a dick. Yes, I get it was likely family movie night, but in his wife's place, I'd rather he not be poking me to look at his texts and generally disrespecting a movie that the daughters clearly wanted to see. Just saying.

Also, when will we decide as a culture that phones should be off in movie theaters? Because that needs to happen, like twenty years ago.

* Why am I commenting on shows from two weeks ago? Because I've been behind on TV since late October, so I'm still trying to catch up.

* Re: Lucy/Mina: When I first read the original Dracula novel as a young teen, I was aware of "Romantic Friendship" as a thing, but in my head, I still liked to think of them as rather more than friends. The text really can be read both ways, as people used Romantic Friendship as a cover for a deeper love than friendship back then. It could be both, and so I happily tucked away that bit of subtext in my head cannon. For all the hot mess of the Dracula show, this is something I'm really comfortable with and it does make me happy.

Also, is it just me, or is Renfield kind of hot? (Mmmmm, menswear). Especially when he's putting assholes in their place.
