* Mohamed Morsi and other Muslim Brotherhood leaders were on trial for ordering the killing of protesters last year. Their supporters are out protesting military rule, and they ended up adjourning the trial.

* There is a huge pile of complicated political and diplomatic stuff going on in the Middle east right now, but I am feverish and tired and writing something that delicate and complicated is too much for me write under current conditions. Odds are I won't be up to it this week just generally. Apologies.

* GOP hopes voters stay home on Election Day:

* Please, please vote, if you haven't already. State and local elections matter as you can see when you look at the laws Republicans have passed to take away basic rights from women and they right to vote from large numbers of people in places like Texas and North Carolina. Even if you don't care about who wins this eectin, vote anyway so you can find out if you've been illegal struck from the voter rolls in your state as part of Republican voter suppression. Better to find out now, so you have most of a year to get your rights back.

* Rand Paul has now been caught cheating so many times in the last two weeks now, including a bunch of times in his book, that I have lost track of the number of times and locations. His staff is now taking his speeches off his website to stop people finding all the plagiarized paragraphs and pages.

* Today I had to make phone calls, meet the floor guy, do bureaucracy, and start prepping for Orycon. I did the first two and a little of the third. There won't be enough sleep tomorrow either as I need to meet with the condo management people, deal with floor guys and painters, mail stuff, etc.. Oh and I need to take Halloween stuff down and turn up for my play date, and tie up loose ends and start packing and, and....

* Battle Royale was not horror either, despite the recommendation framing it that way, so much as dystopian speculative fiction, but it was cheesey and fun in a Lord of the Flies/The Long Walk/Hunger Games sort of way. The violence is over the top and it balances satire with likeable if shallow characterization in a way that really worked for me. It was just enough to get one rooting for or against people without getting so invested that the deaths hurt. The narrative rhythm was surprisingly well constructed so that something that could be overwhelming given the number of characters was extremely watchable, and the flash backs did a good job of illuminating motive and/or character in very short segments. I particularly appreciated the last end piece when you get the text of the dream conversation, and Mitsuko's piece. It was fun and I would likely watch it again.

* Last night during game, Squirrel referenced a Tracy Chapman sang. I got it, but couldn't put a lyrical response together fast enough what with me juggling a whole bunch of plot themes I was planning to toss that night. The other players looked at him like he'd lost his mind, and I could see Squirrel realizing about the same time I was that none of them are old enough to know who the hell she was. Some explanation followed from Squirrel with me backing him up by singing a bar of "Fast Car." C: (wrinkling his nose) My parents like her music. Me: You realize I was in High School when that came out, right? Way to make us feel old! C: *looks chagrined*

When I think of that song and the others from that album that got played in my area, I think of me and Ken listening to that and talking about how we were going to get out of there if it killed us. It was one of those things, like Rocky Horror, that made me feel like I could not only survive, but escape to somewhere better.

I did.

I often wonder if Ken did. If he got his pilot's license and flew away, or if he got trapped in Pennsylvania. I'll likely never know, his name being surprisingly common. Still I think of him, listening to it, and the way I plotted my escape lying in my bed in the attic, listening to the radio and the rain.

I'm a little bit surprised even younger people in Bham don't know who Tracy Chapman is. As far as I know, she's kind of a classic in places like that!

You'd think, but only Squirrel and C are from here, if I'm remembering correctly.
