* The last time the republicans threatened to blow up the US financial system, it cost 1.3 billion dollars. If Republicans care so much about saving money, why do they want to waste so much money on taking the economy hostage? What if we took all the money they plan to waste on their tantrum and spend it on hiring teachers or feeding children or rebuilding infrastructure or hiring back the people who lost their jobs in the sequester? It's a way better use of that money.

You know the raciest on twitter are super annoying, none of them are full fledged members of any native American tribe as far as I can tell.

I'm intrigued by the link between the loss of privacy (or maybe just the expectation of?) and trash-journalism...

We've always had the gossip rags, though; I have to wonder why now is so different.

I'm not an expert, but this is my guess:

Under the studio system, there was more protection. Photo ops were more managed, and there was still private space. You got blind items with more salacious speculation, but they could always be about someone else. I think it started escalating when the actors went free agent. (I think that's better than being owned by the studios for the most part, but the studios protected folks like Carey Grant, by arranging "affairs" with women and feeding them to the press to take pressure off him and Randolf Scott in their private life.) It accelerated over the course of my life, but honestly, I think the internet and personal camera phones dramatically sped up the process. Personal privacy for ordinary folks was eroding at a time that nearly every human over a certain age became a potential paparazzi at a time it kept becoming easier to disseminate pictures and videos.

When my Mother was young that could have big gay naked parties at Billy Wilder's on Montgomery Clift's place and it'd never hit the news. Now, people are taking naked pictures in hotel rooms and uploading them immediately. The tech is small, portable, and powerful. Billy Wilder could simply not invite any reporters to his party and weather the blind items that might leak out. Now everyone's a pap, you have to trust that everyone at an event is trustworthy and there are no telephoto lenses outside The miracle is not that photoes of people's junk turn up against people's will, ut that it doesn't happen to everyone all the time.
