* They were reporting 638 in Egypt at dinner time, with many more bodies still unidentified. The government has started confiscating bodies to prevent counting and identification. Some say the dead are in the thousands. The grief of the families is heartbreaking to watch. The military is crushing democracy and sewing the seeds for a generation of insurgency ensuring that even more will die over this.

Again, I'm not endorsing the Muslim Brotherhood's political aims or their physical attacks on churches and minorities. I simply believe that using live ammo where the protests were peaceful was completely unacceptable Yes, step in where there is violence, but don't provoke it by crushing free speech or clearing out protesters expressing that speech.

Dragging Egypt back to military dictatorship is not good for Egypt or the region.

* There is plenty of coverage of Egypt. I'm picking Anderson Cooper's to link because he has commentary from Mona Eltahawy, for whom I have great respect:

* The Republican War on Democracy continues with them challenging the right to vote and run for office of an NAACP chapter head and them illegally closing polling places:

* The Heritage Foundation has decided to name their new group, the Sentinels, after the big villain group from X-Men. O.o They are not only white supremacists and the premiere Republican think tank, but they now want to be openly known as comic book villains. Sounds about right, really.

* What's with me posting people of different opinions on how to respond to the wave of state endorsed hate crimes in Russia? While there is no debate that we should be furious about the terrible things happening to Russian citizens and that the IOC is backing Russia's homophobia, I think debate over tactics at this stage makes sense. The more voices heard, the better, so I'm posting a variety of voices and strategies where I see them. I am not convinced there is one perfect right answer, but I think the more brains mulling and debating, the more likely we are to settle on a good set of response. Hence me posting Greg Louganis and Harvey Fierstein a day away from each other. They don't agree about what to do, but they both have important things to say.

* I have this three times rule, which is if I see at least three instances of something that pisses me off in a week, I post about it. I've hit the three instances rule about the policing of other people's grief and processing of trauma. This shit it not okay. Everyone processes this sort of thing differently. People have different degrees of need for privacy. People have differing needs for talking or writing about things they are feeling. Some people need a break now and then from processing and look for distraction during those breaks. People take more or less time with the process.

It is a serious asshole maneuver to attack people and insist they are doing it wrong. Yes, that applies to both the cast of Glee and to various young women who have been kidnapped and assaulted in the last year. How they individually deal with what's happened to them is their business, not ours. Let's leave them alone instead of being all judgey, okay?

I'm not sure if I agree or not, but it's worth thinking about and debating.
