Jul. 21st, 2013 01:47 am* Things are getting scary on both sides of the border in the vicinity of Kashmir. I fear this is one to watch.
* Meanwhile, school children all over India are scared to eat school lunches because of the Deadly mass poisoning.
* Also, India is restricting sales of acid, requiring ID and accounting in hopes o preventing acid attacks against girls and women.
* "Happy 95th Birthday, Nelson Mandela!:" http://transgriot.blogspot.com/2013/07/happy-95th-birthday-nelson-mandela.html
* California continues to burn with the fire pretty much out of control. Best of lunch to the approximately 3000 risking their lives to fight it.

* By far the best coverage I've seen of the President's speech and the issues it was in response to was on the Melissa Harris-Perry show. It's long, so I'm just linking the first segment and you can follow from there: http://www.nbcnews.com/id/46979745/vp/46419672#52529472
* RIP 92 year old Helen Thomas, who covered every president from Eisenhower to Obama, and broke a lot of glass ceilings. She wasn't perfect, but I have a soft spot for tough old birds and she was the toughest.
* Several of you pointed this out to me, mid-week, but I didn't get to it until today, what with the drama. "Proposed NASA Budget Cuts Spark Bitter Debate in Congress:" http://www.space.com/22023-nasa-authorization-bill-debate.html
* "Chimpanzees and orangutans remember distant past events:" http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-23330813
* On the choices to wear or not wear a hijab, by someone who has done both. "durian amok: fluid beasts/hija-beasts:" http://www.thestate.ae/durian-amok-fluid-beasts-hija-beasts/
* "GL Community, When Are You Coming Back For My Trans Brothers And Sisters In Wisconsin, New York, New Hampshire and Maryland?:" http://transgriot.blogspot.com/2013/07/gl-community-when-are-you-coming-back.html
* With all the NSA spying stuff, I keep thinking about the plot line in Boondocks where the man surveilling Huey starts contacting him.
* Today was productive. I got real sleep. Cats got extended pettins. I spent a couple of hours making notes on my research on the patio, at times with Mache or Squirrel for company. I will miss the patio. It may be ugly, but it's covered and has space for my gardening gear. I only made half the notes needing making, but I did 3 1/2 chapters, and my minimum was one. I ran out of paper on my clipboard and was hungry and ready for meds so I came in. Squirrel and I did a bunch of housework type things needing doing as well. I did not water the garden enough for this heat wave this week and lost some plants as a result.
* I continued my QUITBAG documentary festival. Paper Dolls was fascinating. It's about filipino trans women in Israel. I've seen a lot of coverage of Israeli racism against African and African descended people, but I had not previously seen coverage of their cruel treatment of filipino guest workers. The women themselves are amazing, and I wish them all well.
* I remember when they were making Paragraph 175, but it never showed where I lived and I wasn't able to get my hands on a copy until now. TW: Rape. It is heartbreaking, but you likely guessed that. It has interviews with all but two of the gay holocaust survivors alive when they were making the documentary. They are all gone now, the last of them having died a year or two ago, the incredibly brave Jewish man who snuck in to detention to try to save his lover. This can be pretty hard to watch. People are talking about terrible things that happened to them. People are talking about not only the dead, but in one case his repeated rape. His anger is as raw as if it just happened. Understandably. Some of the Christians were NAZI sympathizers or joined to keep themselves safe. Some of the survivors lost nearly everyone. One man survived 8 1/2 years interned one place or another. There are no fucking Words.
This is not an easy movie, but it's an important one. In many cases, this is the only record of what happened; this is the only chance to hear the voices of these Elders. So often their suffering and deaths have been ignored and minimized, their loses treated as unimportant. They have been silenced over and over and denied not only reparations, but acknowledgement that what was done to them and their friends was wrong.
They need to be remembered.
* I am not convinced I like where the final season of Being human is going, but I'm still watching.
