* The heat is really getting to me. I went back to get more fans, but they were completely out of the ones I wanted. I did a bunch of cleaning/organizing projects tonight, including the autoclaving. Since I was already going to super heat the kitchen, I brewed two kinds of sweet tea while I was at it. I am tired and stinky hot. There is still so much to do. Squirrel's working tonight, so at least I can go naked.

* People kept talking about Deadwood, so I am giving it a try. I have spent most of my life avoiding westerns. As a kid, I quickly grasped the facts about westward expansion and genocide. I could not be comfortable with movies and books that made people committing genocide into heroes. I have watched a handful over the years, mostly the ones that to some degree deconstruct the myth of the West. I have also various points given in a watched a handful of the ones considered classics, like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid, the 7 Samurai remake with cowboys, etc., but this is not my genre and the racial politics frequently make me itch. Again, this is no my genre an it is not even close to my specialties in history. While I've studied specific things about the Westward expansion and genocide, but I've never made a systematic study and have massive gaps in knowledge, so this is grain o salt territory as far as my opinions. How far is it out of my bailiwick? I was well into my thirties before I began to grasp just how pervasive the effect of the civil war was on all sorts of seemingly unconnected things in the history and culture.

Deadwood makes me itch too, for a variety of reasons. I do give them credit for being honest about the racism and sexism pervasive in the culture, but so far, it's not really pushing back in any useful way. I do not like what it is putting into my head, and I am not trusting the agenda of the writing, if that makes sense.

However, it is brilliantly written and acted. The sets, set dressing, costuming, and make up are excellent. It is realistic in a whole lot of ways I think are important. Some of the things it is saying about the mythologizing of these people and this particularly shameful period of our history are important. It is definitely giving me things to think about. This does not make the process any more pleasant.

I am very much team Doc and team Calamity Jane. I have nothing clever to say yet, but I do intend to watch the other half of the season 1 set when it comes from the library. I will see how I feel then and whether I want to continue to do this to myself.
