* The Real Scandal is cutting food aid to the working poor:
* I think it's shameful that we are keeping corporate welfare for Monsanto, but cutting food for children and the working poor on the grounds that making rich people richer and cutting the deficit even further trumps feeding people in the middle of a financial crisis caused by the greed of the super rich. Remember that half of the people on SNAP/EBT are children. How can we justify starving them while still subsidizing Monsanto?
* Despite rampant gun violence including the mass shooting on Mother's Day, Louisiana lawmakers are moving to loosen gun laws:

* Thursday for game potluck, there was cream cheese, which tasted weird to me. Not bad, just weird. It was more plain yoghurt than cream cheese. Just as I was drifting off to sleep, I figured out what the problem was. I grew up in a suburb of Philly. What sort of cream cheese do people in Philly eat? Philadelphia Cream Cheese. It's unquestioned. As in, I never ate any other kind until I moved West. As in, I didn't know other kinds existed until I was old enough to drink legally. As in, I've never purchased any other brand cream cheese and have only ever eaten other types in situations like a cafeteria line or a hotel breakfast, where the cheese tasted weird to me. *facepalm* The cheese was fine; it was me not expecting cream cheese to taste like plain yoghurt.
* So Les Mis is out on DvD and I watched it again. Oh the crying! A couple of things struck me now that I can sing along without being asked to leave. 1. When they repitched Javert for Mr. Crowe, they made it impossible for me to sing because the grand canyon between my upper and lower range is awkwardly right in the middle. 2. If anything, Russell Crowe sounds worse on my TV 3. I feel really bad for Russell Crowe. Singing solos in public is a brave thing to do. It's a whole lot braver if your voice is average and you are surrounded by people who can really sing. They are still mocking him on late night TV. It's got to hurt to be the guy who sort of ruined Les Mis. I very much which they'd found someone who could keep up with the others, but that doesn't mean I don't wince for Mr. Crowe as well as at him. (Maybe I am more sensitive to this because my own voice is in ruins.) 4. If anything, singing along has made me appreciate Eddie Redmayne's voice even more. He was the real surprise of the film for me. IMDB tells me I've seen him in other things and he made zero impression on me in them. When I wrote my original review, I mentioned that I was not sure why they hired him until he opened his mouth to sing. Trying to follow him really made me appreciate how much work is going into that vocal performance. 5. The difference in style between Miss Barks' performance as Eponine and everyone else's is less jarring on the small screen. 6. When I saw it in theater, I took a restroom break during the annoying extra song they added after Cosette's rescue. This time, I sort of forgot I was watching and wandered off during it, so I missed the sequence again. Trust me, it is a damning criticism.
* It seems to me rather a shame that the Versus Versace launch wasn't before the Met Ball, because that's a context they make sense for and it would have helped people figure out how to wear haute couture punk. Of course haute couture and punk are mutually exclusive, but that's a whole other issue.

Date: 2013-05-19 08:55 pm (UTC)The cream cheese thing makes sense. Philadelphia is my baseline for cream cheese as well. I think it has a much tangier taste and smoother texture.
