* I'm having a Boo Radley sort of day. I loaded stuff to make copies of into my pack last night, but stayed in bed reading "Nightmare" with Hector instead. I was meant to change ore tanks when I got up, but after I'd cleaned up the messes that appeared while I slept and changed litters, I mostly just wanted to lie down again. I suspect I'll go to bed early and call tonight mostly a wash.

* Some things rm wrote made me decide to dig up LA Confidential. Looking at the date it fell during one of the periods when I was too busy for movies, and the name turned me off. Not having seen advertisements, I clearly made an incorrect guess about the contents, and I likely would have skipped it anyway if I had known what it was about. Back then, this wasn't the sort of thing to interest me. I can date my turn in interest round about 2006 and LA Confidential was 1997. If I'd heard Kevin Spacey was in it, I might have gone anyway if my friends had been going, given his Usual Suspects performance. Possibly. But this wasn't my friends taste or mine at the time.
Now though? Fascinating, even though I guessed very early what was really going on; even though it laked certain elements that make other period thrillers of this type I've seen more fundamentally interesting to me. I am a sucker for performances like this. I expected to be impressed by Kevin Spacey and actually went and stood close to the screen to see the thing rm spoiled for me that made me want to see a movie I'd otherwise forgotten existed. (The one type of spoiler I don't mind is a hint at something that would make me seek out a movie I otherwise wouldn't see. I hate them for things I want to see, if that makes sense. I want to know the bare minimum I need to decide whether or not to see a film). Anyway, it was as spectacular and eerie as promised. I ended up almost as fascinated by what James Cromwell was doing. I caught on to the plotty bit early so ended up watching him more closely than I otherwise might. It's beautiful and understated. I finally put my finger on the thing that has always nagged at me about David Strathairn, which in itself was worth it. (He's like someone but Sam Waterston and Edward Norton in a blender. I often forget to pay attention to what he's saying in films because I can never quite place that much of the familiar and unfamiliar. Now I feel better.) He's an excellent actor and now I can just enjoy his work. Even with my correct guess as to what was really going on, I did have fun watching the twists. I liked that there were good reasons for the main characters not to share information instead of the usual "Because the plot requires them to senselessly hide things from each other." I love it when a plot actually makes sense. Oddly enough, even guessing what I guessed and the one spoiler I had, the abruptness still startled me. I am seldom even startled, so that in itself is impressive. Is it a movie I'll watch over and over? Likely not. It's still to the right of my particular interests. However, I'm very happy to have watched it the once and wouldn't leave the room if it was playing again.
