Dec. 29th, 2012 04:22 am* The Medical student who was gang raped on a bus in Delhi has died of her injuries.
* Dr. Zaidoun al-Zoabi, the voice of the Syrian resistance, and his younger brother are still bing detained by Assad's Secret Police.
* I see the President is losing patience with the Republican plan to crash the US economy if they don't get everything they want. I don't blame him.
* Why cancelling unemployment insurance and simultaneously taking action to halt the recovery in favour of another Great Recession or Depression because the super rich want to put a few more percentage points into their overseas savings account is a terrible idea and incredibly cruel, especially as unemployment insurance extension is work about 1/2 a percentage point to this year's economic growth all by itself, whereas tax cuts only serves to suck more economic activity out of the economy since money in savings accounts isn't circulating, while unemployment insurance has a multiplicative effect as it circulates repeatedly through local businesses. This move to cut off unemployment insurance in this sort of economy is unprecedented, but the Republicans insist.
* Sen. Ron Widen and a handful of others try to restore some civil liberties to Americans, but are blocked at every turn by both parties. I miss the 4th Amendment. I wish it were still in effect.

* Today was a real struggle. I did manage to force myself out to try again to achieve bureaucracy. When I was making my copies to hand in there were some people trying to help a fragile old lady who was clearly not up to dealing with basics let alone the mountain of paperwork being poor requires. (I'm guessing 60/40 schizophrenia vs dementia). She was homeless, so hadn't been getting her social security. She was stranded there, as they no longer give out bus passes due to budget cuts. It's a long way downtown, too far for the able bodied and she was not. Shelter curfew is at 6PM. I was going that was so I took her. I let her vent and weep and made reassuring sounds. As we got into downtown, I pointed out various places she could get help with various things. I dropped her off at the pharmacy near her shelter so she could get meds and gave her my loose dollars for bus fare. I am hoping the shelter folks help her get started on dealing with social services as she clearly needs help. Honestly, what she needs is a group home or the like as whichever thing had disorganized her thinking, it's unlikely it will be getting better instead of worse and she clearly needed a responsible adult making sure she was okay. At least the weather here is fairly mild. Anyway, I did drop off papers at both places that needed them and I got my laundry quarters. I even remembered to pick up my meds. I had two other things on the to do list, but they were between the two places I needed to drop off papers and I did not want to make unnecessary stops with the lady in my car. The paper drop off took less than a minute and it still made her nervous. Next week, maybe.
* I did manage to change two tanks and do dishes before my rp play date. Unfortunately, people weren't feeling well and peeled out early. I did manage to desc the Library on the wiki before I succumbed to wave three of the infection. It looks like the anti-biotic wasn't strong enough after all. I suddenly had no choice but to lie down before I toppled. The black cats and I ended up watching Master and Commander in the living room. I suspect that during my protracted illness there's been some fish die off. I've been picking blue guppy bodies out of their tank and I haven't seen more than two corys at a time in two weeks. Both platys colonies are doing well, though there still aren't many blue fry. The orange guppies are still establishing so few fry, but the adults look healthy. The tetras have at least seven out of the initial ten. The otos, plecos, and bettas are fine. Constantine and Eliza seem to be getting along and are frequently schooling together, but I won't be sanguine for another month as Constantine can turn vicious on a dime. (Those last two are the cichlids). When I'm feeling better, I'll try to restart the blue guppies again.

* I'm replaying John Lithgow reading a Gingrich press release on Colbert from the primaries because I still think it's brilliant and hilarious. The good bit starts just after 3:00.:
