Nov. 1st, 2012 02:31 am* New York City all by itself has a population larger than that of Vermont. Add in all the folks in Hoboken, Newark, and all the other affected areas. The subways within New York are likely going to be out for weeks, causing huge issues for working class people who must spend hours hiking to work. They are having to evacuate several damaged hospitals either entirely or in part. Bellevue is essentially useless. They are still rescuing or provisioning stranded people in places like Hoboken where it's not safe to leave because of electrified flood waters and plucking them out of stranded vehicles. The loss of life is sad, but this could have been so much worse without Federal coordination and Johnny on the spot rescue and evacuation coordination and of course the National Guard and Army Corps of Engineers. They are sending utility vehicles and technicians from all over New England. Mitt Romney still hasn't retracted his claims that we should replace all this large scale efficient organization and well trained disaster responders with private businesses which would magically decide to give their resources for free in emergencies, although he is now pretending he hasn't been in favour of entirely getting rid of FEMA. Right. Oh, he also claims he knows what it's like to clean up after a hurricane because one time they made him help clean a football feild after a game, because that's totally the same. Riiiiiight. They are still working out who is dead or just missing, so I can't tell you the exact death toll.
* Among the footage, there was a roller coaster I rode as a child half submerged. It's horrible enough at this distance, knowing I'll likely never see that coastline again. I know there is no way I can even begin to grasp how it feels for those who have literally lost all they own except the clothes on their backs.
* Just a reminder that the Red Cross is putting out an urgent call for blood, so if you can legally donate, please do so. They also can really use money to help disaster survivors. CNN also has a good list of reputable charities here: http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/impact.your.world/
* Seeing as how the President is too busy handling a National crisis and actually helping people to campaign, Mitt Romney decided to take advantage of that by attacking the President hard at campaign events. This included his campaign surrogate ordering supporters to steal Halloween candy from the children of Obama supporters. Yes, Mitt Romney thinks the best thing to do during a national crisis is to do photo ops of Mitt Romney pretending to help and stealing candy from children. If this isn't symbolic of what a Mitt Romney Presidency would be like, I don't know what the fuck is. It's like him saying, "Elect me and I will pretend to care while stealing the future from your children." Anyway, here's the clip:

Remember four years ago that white Republican woman who claimed a big scary black male Democrat attacked her, but it turned out she carved the words into her own face and made the whole thing up? (Hint: The writing was backward and the ATM camera showed no assailant?) So now there's an imaginary attack by gay Democrats on a Republican campaign worker which he faked. These are nasty tactics that fundamentally undermine civil society while trivializing real gay bashings and the like. Fuck you, Kyle Wood!
