* The opposition in Damascus seems to have shot down a government military helicopter.

* Mine unrest continues in South Africa, with only 13% back to work. It's now having political effects on their next presidential election.

* There is catastrophic flooding in Niger. 25 thousand are homeless and 65 there after the river Niger hopped it's banks in the capital.

* Hurricane Isaac is expected to hit New Orleans. People in Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and Louisiana are battening down. All of these but Georgia have declared a state of emergency. Stay safe out there, folks. For those worried about Haiti, the government did relent and let some of the folks in the tent city into the shelters. The official death toll is nineteen, though that doesn't look definitive, as some people were still missing when the articles I found were posted. The crop damage and resulting starvation is hard to guess at this point, and a whole lot of homes were damaged or lost, in a country where they still haven't recovered from the big earthquake, hence the tent city. There is completely understandable concern that the cholera epidemic will ge even worse because of the flooding.

* True Blood: Is the moral of Alcide's plot line 1. Politics matter or 2. Drugs are good? I'm going with 3. Alcide should always appear shirtless for no reason at all.
