* For the 24th we ate Asian food in accordance with Tradition and watched Ice skating. (We are still catching up, as I have taken to saving the best bits to share.)
I usually open presents the 21st, but A. Half of them were not here by then (The other things were not wrapped and so have already been assimilated into my home.) and B. I barely managed ritual at all with everything going on. I did end up opening them before reheating left overs Thursday morning. Squirrel got me two books I really wanted and among other things my sister sent were some of my Mothers little traveling sketchbooks she'd use if she saw something interesting when she was out and about. Some were studies for things she'd put in her paintings, but most are just interesting studies or things she wanted to remember later. The last few years before she got to ill to get around much, she had this tiny paint set and travel easel and post card sized bits of stiff water colour paper and she'd carry those around too to do little water colour studies. My sister sent two of those, both unfinished.
Du to a communication issue I ended up with very little of her art after she died. She kept meaning to send me more, but her health deteriorated fast her final year and she was exhausted when she wasn't in the hospital.
My favorite is the swan one that she gave me because I was the only one who looked at it and genuinely loved it and could say what exactly made it good in my eyes. It's an earlier piece, sort of pivotal in her development of her own artistic voice, but it's subtle and delicate and most people liked her bolder pieces. I did too, but I liked the way I could see her way of seeing and expressing her self changing in that picture. I was the only one who saw what she saw, so she sent it home with me at the end of a visit.
I asked for some of her pictures after she died, but my sister misunderstood and gave me all the photo albums instead. Which I don't mind. I'm the one who knows who most of the people are and she and her husband digitalized for themselves before they sent them. The physical albums are more use to me than digital copies would have been. I just really wish I had a few of her later framed paintings, though I am happy to get what I am given.
I need to go through the things my sister sent properly.
Everything is so rushed this month and my own chronic illness stuff is particularly bad.
I remember how quiet the news used to be the back half of December until Congress came back in January, but since 2016 it feels like Trump never shuts up and the Horrors in general never cease.
Still we persist.
Livia remains ill. She is sensibly spending as much time as possible asleep like the sensible creature she is. I can track her movements around the apartment by the sneezing and snuffling.

* For the 24th we ate Asian food in accordance with Tradition and watched Ice skating. (We are still catching up, as I have taken to saving the best bits to share.)
I usually open presents the 21st, but A. Half of them were not here by then (The other things were not wrapped and so have already been assimilated into my home.) and B. I barely managed ritual at all with everything going on. I did end up opening them before reheating left overs Thursday morning. Squirrel got me two books I really wanted and among other things my sister sent were some of my Mothers little traveling sketchbooks she'd use if she saw something interesting when she was out and about. Some were studies for things she'd put in her paintings, but most are just interesting studies or things she wanted to remember later. The last few years before she got to ill to get around much, she had this tiny paint set and travel easel and post card sized bits of stiff water colour paper and she'd carry those around too to do little water colour studies. My sister sent two of those, both unfinished.
Du to a communication issue I ended up with very little of her art after she died. She kept meaning to send me more, but her health deteriorated fast her final year and she was exhausted when she wasn't in the hospital.
My favorite is the swan one that she gave me because I was the only one who looked at it and genuinely loved it and could say what exactly made it good in my eyes. It's an earlier piece, sort of pivotal in her development of her own artistic voice, but it's subtle and delicate and most people liked her bolder pieces. I did too, but I liked the way I could see her way of seeing and expressing her self changing in that picture. I was the only one who saw what she saw, so she sent it home with me at the end of a visit.
I asked for some of her pictures after she died, but my sister misunderstood and gave me all the photo albums instead. Which I don't mind. I'm the one who knows who most of the people are and she and her husband digitalized for themselves before they sent them. The physical albums are more use to me than digital copies would have been. I just really wish I had a few of her later framed paintings, though I am happy to get what I am given.
I need to go through the things my sister sent properly.
Everything is so rushed this month and my own chronic illness stuff is particularly bad.
I remember how quiet the news used to be the back half of December until Congress came back in January, but since 2016 it feels like Trump never shuts up and the Horrors in general never cease.
Still we persist.
Livia remains ill. She is sensibly spending as much time as possible asleep like the sensible creature she is. I can track her movements around the apartment by the sneezing and snuffling.
