* I've been thinking a lot about Varian Fry lately. He was a journalist who saw what the NAZIs were doing in Europe to Jews and to refugees in general, and got backing to go to Vichy France to try to rescue people. He went way beyond his remit to save "talented individuals." He did his damamdest to save as many people as he could regardless. He organized with various ambassadors and diplomatic staff, with people with special talents (such as a cartoonist turned forger). So many people helped, quietly pushing paperwork through that they likely knew was dodgy to get this person out, that family out. They kept their heads down and did the work. American low level staff quietly doing things Antisemites in the American government would hate. The Chinese Ambassador supplied formal looking papers in Mandarin that generally didn't get checked because the officials doing the checking didn't read Chinese characters. People worked together across languages and Geo-political differences in whatever way they could, small and large to do the right thing.
Eventually the state department noticed and ordered them to stop. Fry and many others kept going best they could another eight months. Ordinary people being quietly brave in the face of their various governments and literal NAZI occupation.
If you are reading this and are any sort of public servant, medical worker, etc., I beg of you to stay in place as long as you can. To be grit in the cogs when you are ordered to do harm, and to be the grease that quietly moves forward anything that might help people, save people. Don't say anything controversial if yours is a position that makes a difference even in a small way that allows you to resist fascism.
For those of us on the outside, the job is different. Our job is to stay noisy every way we can. To demonstrate if we can in person. If we can shop up en masse to block a department being invaded by DOGE hackers or to make an ICE raid so much herder or what have you, do it. If you can contact your Federal, state, and local official to complain, complain, complain do it. If you can make posters, like that artist in DC putting up the "He's stealing from you" posters, do it. If you can help organize resistance, do it. If you can network to get people healthcare or to safety, do it. Find a way to resist using whatever strengths you have.
There is more than one way to stand up to kleptocratic, fascist, autocracy. Do whatever you can do. Remember, that it's no one person who can magically save us all. This is more like many hands moving a stage diver over the heads of the crowd, or like a chorus or a Capella group where people have different parts to sing and breath at different times so the song stays uninterrupted.

* I've been thinking a lot about Varian Fry lately. He was a journalist who saw what the NAZIs were doing in Europe to Jews and to refugees in general, and got backing to go to Vichy France to try to rescue people. He went way beyond his remit to save "talented individuals." He did his damamdest to save as many people as he could regardless. He organized with various ambassadors and diplomatic staff, with people with special talents (such as a cartoonist turned forger). So many people helped, quietly pushing paperwork through that they likely knew was dodgy to get this person out, that family out. They kept their heads down and did the work. American low level staff quietly doing things Antisemites in the American government would hate. The Chinese Ambassador supplied formal looking papers in Mandarin that generally didn't get checked because the officials doing the checking didn't read Chinese characters. People worked together across languages and Geo-political differences in whatever way they could, small and large to do the right thing.
Eventually the state department noticed and ordered them to stop. Fry and many others kept going best they could another eight months. Ordinary people being quietly brave in the face of their various governments and literal NAZI occupation.
If you are reading this and are any sort of public servant, medical worker, etc., I beg of you to stay in place as long as you can. To be grit in the cogs when you are ordered to do harm, and to be the grease that quietly moves forward anything that might help people, save people. Don't say anything controversial if yours is a position that makes a difference even in a small way that allows you to resist fascism.
For those of us on the outside, the job is different. Our job is to stay noisy every way we can. To demonstrate if we can in person. If we can shop up en masse to block a department being invaded by DOGE hackers or to make an ICE raid so much herder or what have you, do it. If you can contact your Federal, state, and local official to complain, complain, complain do it. If you can make posters, like that artist in DC putting up the "He's stealing from you" posters, do it. If you can help organize resistance, do it. If you can network to get people healthcare or to safety, do it. Find a way to resist using whatever strengths you have.
There is more than one way to stand up to kleptocratic, fascist, autocracy. Do whatever you can do. Remember, that it's no one person who can magically save us all. This is more like many hands moving a stage diver over the heads of the crowd, or like a chorus or a Capella group where people have different parts to sing and breath at different times so the song stays uninterrupted.
