When I was teaching social studies we were told never, ever to let on we were teaching "critical thinking." Not out loud. Never in writing. Even though it was in the state curriculum guidelines.
Letting on that we were teaching their children to analyze sources and think critically about information, history, politics, etc. is how you end up with pickets in front of your school.

How racist are mainstream Republicans?
Their argument is that the 13th and 14th Amendment to the constitution, passed in the 1860's, aren't constitutional because the Dred Scott of 1857 permanently barred black people from citizenship forever rendering later Amendments moot, even though it didn't, and the black letter law of the constitution is above SCOTUS decisions.

...And then it got worse. It turns out that not only was Trump there to disrespect dead marines, by celebrating with smiles and thumbs ups over their deaths, but he was there to illegally film a campaign commercial and his staff physically attacked a cemetery worker for telling them they weren't allowed to do this. Then Trump painted a target on the worker for his fanatical followers in online posts to rub in the message of how much he despised the military dead and gold star families, which was also a theme in his previous presidential campaigns.

So it turns out the five years and retest was for people who's bodies don't periodically actively try to kill them. On the up side, I was imagining having to stick something so strenuous and exhausting into my September or October which tend to be packed and inherently strenuous and exhausting. Instead, I can put it in November, right in the sweet spot for vaccination immunity to cut down on risk of infection at the hospital.
* I keep thinking about a conversation I had with Newest Millennial in early August. We were close to the primary due date for the state and local election ballot (Our Presidential primary is separate and way earlier in the year.) Both Goth Millennial and Newest Millennial had misplaced their ballots in the speed move. They were like, we should probably spend tomorrow looking for them, and i was like, "It's probably be way easier to vote in person down at the courthouse." Them: O.o
So I explained that the provision for people who's ballot has gone astray in the mail or been misplaced is to go down to this one easy to find office during business hours and they'll give you a ballot which you can either take home or fill out and turn in right there at the drop box. It's a super low hassle process, especially if you don't wait until the last minute, when there might be a short line. I cautioned them to destroy the mail ballot when they find it. (They went and used this method of voting. It was fine).
Newest Millennial had lived their whole life in Southern extreme voter suppression states that pretty much want people like them dead let alone voting. They turned to me on the way back to the car and said something like, "It's amazing living in a real democracy for the first time in my life."
I think about that a lot. I think about how much easier things are here because we do have real democracy. I think about all the ways they make registration and voting easy, quick, and low hassle. I think about living under a state and local government that responds to constituents and makes an effort to not just keep people alive, but improve the quality of life instead of make it worse, a government that cares about infrastructure and safe drinking water and affordable housing. The government here isn't perfect and I'd love if we went to ranked choice voting, but it really is Democracy. We of course still are in constant danger from Republican christo-Fascists at the national level, but for the most part, life is good here.
I think about the way Newest Millennial is slowly, but surely feeling the weight of a lifetime of living under constant threat from a government that will do everything in it's power to harm lift.
I want for all of you to live under real democracy. I really really do. It's why I keep pushing so very hard for people to note only vote, but make sure everyone you know does. We could have this everywhere if we all wanted it enough and worked together to get it.
* 8/26/24: We left for the lake, even though it was nearly the time we normally leave the lake and the weather's been septemberish for the local definition of pre-extreme climate change since the Big Storm. it was clear out and fine for bathing suits, but the sun was low enough it wasn't really heating the surface water. It was fine. Like, I'm used to the Atlantic off the Jersey coast, and In early July it is colder than this in the lake and I swim in that.
Still, we collectively decided went hair would not be ideal given the givens, so we went out about armpit depth. We really could have swum, but the not warm enough to make sitting around for a couple hours appealing part deterred us. We went home and they did bits of things around the house while I started spaghetti and mixed up a good sauce. Once the food was ready we settled in and watched Olympic judo, bouldering, and more Rhythmic gymnastics.
Yes, I know Olympics are over, but we didn't have time to watch much the first week, and we're kind of snail paced, as there are certain things I saved for the Millennials specifically. All the stuff I can watch solo except for some artistic gymnastics they may or may not be into (apparatus induvial events), has been watched already. The things left are the bits that we really wanted to watch together and that's only once or twice a week. I forgot to ask if they want closing ceremonies. D'oh!
While we were at the lake, we were headed for our gear to hand out a bit until a bee got way too into me. I spotted a ring of mushrooms, I'd nearly stepped into and pointed it out to the others.

It turns out that not only was Trump there to disrespect dead marines, by celebrating with smiles and thumbs ups over their deaths, but he was there to illegally film a campaign commercial and his staff physically attacked a cemetery worker for telling them they weren't allowed to do this. Then Trump painted a target on the worker for his fanatical followers in online posts to rub in the message of how much he despised the military dead and gold star families, which was also a theme in his previous presidential campaigns.

So it turns out the five years and retest was for people who's bodies don't periodically actively try to kill them. On the up side, I was imagining having to stick something so strenuous and exhausting into my September or October which tend to be packed and inherently strenuous and exhausting. Instead, I can put it in November, right in the sweet spot for vaccination immunity to cut down on risk of infection at the hospital.
* I keep thinking about a conversation I had with Newest Millennial in early August. We were close to the primary due date for the state and local election ballot (Our Presidential primary is separate and way earlier in the year.) Both Goth Millennial and Newest Millennial had misplaced their ballots in the speed move. They were like, we should probably spend tomorrow looking for them, and i was like, "It's probably be way easier to vote in person down at the courthouse." Them: O.o
So I explained that the provision for people who's ballot has gone astray in the mail or been misplaced is to go down to this one easy to find office during business hours and they'll give you a ballot which you can either take home or fill out and turn in right there at the drop box. It's a super low hassle process, especially if you don't wait until the last minute, when there might be a short line. I cautioned them to destroy the mail ballot when they find it. (They went and used this method of voting. It was fine).
Newest Millennial had lived their whole life in Southern extreme voter suppression states that pretty much want people like them dead let alone voting. They turned to me on the way back to the car and said something like, "It's amazing living in a real democracy for the first time in my life."
I think about that a lot. I think about how much easier things are here because we do have real democracy. I think about all the ways they make registration and voting easy, quick, and low hassle. I think about living under a state and local government that responds to constituents and makes an effort to not just keep people alive, but improve the quality of life instead of make it worse, a government that cares about infrastructure and safe drinking water and affordable housing. The government here isn't perfect and I'd love if we went to ranked choice voting, but it really is Democracy. We of course still are in constant danger from Republican christo-Fascists at the national level, but for the most part, life is good here.
I think about the way Newest Millennial is slowly, but surely feeling the weight of a lifetime of living under constant threat from a government that will do everything in it's power to harm lift.
I want for all of you to live under real democracy. I really really do. It's why I keep pushing so very hard for people to note only vote, but make sure everyone you know does. We could have this everywhere if we all wanted it enough and worked together to get it.
* 8/26/24: We left for the lake, even though it was nearly the time we normally leave the lake and the weather's been septemberish for the local definition of pre-extreme climate change since the Big Storm. it was clear out and fine for bathing suits, but the sun was low enough it wasn't really heating the surface water. It was fine. Like, I'm used to the Atlantic off the Jersey coast, and In early July it is colder than this in the lake and I swim in that.
Still, we collectively decided went hair would not be ideal given the givens, so we went out about armpit depth. We really could have swum, but the not warm enough to make sitting around for a couple hours appealing part deterred us. We went home and they did bits of things around the house while I started spaghetti and mixed up a good sauce. Once the food was ready we settled in and watched Olympic judo, bouldering, and more Rhythmic gymnastics.
Yes, I know Olympics are over, but we didn't have time to watch much the first week, and we're kind of snail paced, as there are certain things I saved for the Millennials specifically. All the stuff I can watch solo except for some artistic gymnastics they may or may not be into (apparatus induvial events), has been watched already. The things left are the bits that we really wanted to watch together and that's only once or twice a week. I forgot to ask if they want closing ceremonies. D'oh!
While we were at the lake, we were headed for our gear to hand out a bit until a bee got way too into me. I spotted a ring of mushrooms, I'd nearly stepped into and pointed it out to the others.

Me (teasing back): Bwahahaha! Yes, that is the most important consideration.
