I want to make clear as someone with degrees in both Classics and medieval history, that I've been angry for ages over White supremacist appropriation of Vikings and Norse history and their recent incursions into classical History and literature. The white supremacist looking for antecedents in the extremely multi-racial, multi-ethnic, roman Empire are barking up entirely the wrong tree, in particular. My posting of architectural images does not signal some sort of right wing agenda as you can likely guess from my everything else really.

When I was in Grad school for medieval history, everyone else in my program was Catholic, ex-catholic, or in the process of conversion. I, obviously, was not and am not. A person can study a subject, an era, etc. without endorsing everything in it and most of the history academics I dealt with had a complex and nuanced understanding of things going on in their area of study. One can study colonialism and/or genocide, for example without endorsing them. I can look at art and architecture from the past and enjoy the aesthetic while at the same time emphatically not wanting to live in that time period, for reasons I can likely articulate for hours for pretty much any time period you can name.

There was no golden age. I want to make the time period in better not go back to some previous period without things like indoor plumbing, safe water, modern medicine, and oh yeah VERY FEW RIGHTS for people like me. I get grumpy a lot of the time about people flattening out the past, because people are complicated, culture is complicated, laws often aren't what people imagine they were, politics are complicated, and most times and places had good and bad things going on at the same time.

When I look at the past, I'm not imaging myself as a noble, because I know for a fact that most of my ancestors were poor or middle class at best. Nearly all of them were working people, and that generally just sucks. That's the side my bread is buttered on. If I lived at any time before the invention of antibiotics, I'd have been dead by seventeen or eighteen of a lung infection if something hadn't gotten me first. Odds are I'd have been deaf or seriously hard of hearing with oozing infectious sores on my legs, judging from my cf carrier and by long history of infections growing up. That's if I hadn't fallen off something i climbed or been killed by a farm accident or a war or contaminated water or.... I barley made it past my mid-thirties with modern medicine.

This doesn't even get into the whole queer in at least three senses of the word and the way that places out complexly depending on time period, circumstance or culture.

In any case, my interest in history does not indicate some weird white supremacist yearning. A lot of time me posting a bunch of pictures of French landmarks etc., for example, has to do with me thinking of my father, rather than some political agenda. I often bank images from places I've been reading about or thinking about or just randomly suit my fancy. I do post a lot of aesthetically or historically interesting images on tumblr, but I'm not someone who forgets on who's backs the resources that went into palaces and art and what have you were made.

"Tim Anderson disagrees. He’s the man trying to get the books declared obscene—and, in the process, change obscenity law in the United States. Anderson, a lawyer and Republican Virginia state delegate whose district includes Virginia Beach, will argue the case later this month. (Another Republican, Tommy Altman, filed the petition; Altman recently lost his primary for a House seat in Virginia’s 2nd district.) The petition is a new twist on recent right-wing attacks on materials that address sexuality, gender, and race. Rather than demanding that school boards or librarians remove books, the current case takes the books to court, using an obscure Virginia law that would allow the judge, if she found the books obscene, to ban bookstores, libraries, and even private citizens from selling or sharing them, everywhere in Virginia."

* Saturday I had a bad fall dismounting my bed. Sigh. The bruising is alarming, but I think i didn't damage anything important. When I was taking head Millennial home the sky was cloudless and the sunset was Turner painting stunning due to all the ash in the air. The heat and air are dangerous, but still there is an unnatural beauty to it.

The weekend fundraising was stunning and very welcome. The appliance sale only lasts 'til Tuesday, so Monday morning out I went to get an oven. It was very lucky we raised the money before the sale ended as the price had increased dramatically since early July and did not match website prices as a result, much as I feared. Having raised more than we asked for, we could still get an excellent flat top electric, which was the goal. They are faster, more energy, efficient, and easy to clean than the raised element ones. I had also forgotten the price for installation, which is very worth it. There is zero chance of two people with assorted disabilities hauling a stove here, installing it, and hauling the old one to the dump. We'd have had to rent a truck and dollies and...

So we had enough even with the price hike and the taxes and the installation fee. Thank you all again for supporting me in this. There was zero chance of sorting it in anything like a reasonable time scale otherwise. The oven should arrive Friday.

* Wednesday, I promised to take a couple of the Millennials swimming. The heat and air quality have been terrible, but the air is generally a bit better at the lake and the run off fed lake is refreshing on a too hot for the local ecosystem and me kind of day.

It drizzled in the morning and was very overcast in the afternoon, but really, to me it had simply cut the air contaminants in halfish and lowered the temperature to reasonable summer day in this micro-climate from unnatural and wrong levels.

I had a doctor's appointment for the afternoon, and had scheduled with the millennials to pick them up downtown after. I had a massive number of downtown errands, but the timing looked reasonable. The poverty clinic was way behind, as is often the case, especially with the under-staffing thanks to the pandemic, and I knew my appointment would be longish. There is skin cancer in my family. I have been periodically on medicines that increase the chances of it. I'm also an Elder Goth, which is protective. If you've been avoiding the sun whenever possible since the mid-'80's your skin ages much more gently and it drops your skin cancer risk. Still I'm in my fifties, and I've had assorted lumps, moles and skin tags since my early thirties. I also have a serious autoimmune condition. Once I went on Medicare, i made a habit of going in once a year or so for a skin check/tag removal because it's free and a really good idea preventative medicine wise. (It infuriates me that we got ACA instead of Universal single payer or at minimum medicare for all. EVERY BODY should get basic preventative medicine.) Anyway, I skipped two years for the pandemic and a bunch of things had grown or appeared or changed and this takes a while. (I'm fine by the way. The new weird thing may end up getting removed if it grows or gets more annoying, but otherwise is a nuisance not a danger. We're also keeping an eye on yet another cyst, but the other random stuff was the usual).

I also needed bloodwork, and to pick up meds at the attached Pharmacy, change stuff at the library, go to the post office, pay a small bill I pay every month in person, and drop off my sandals for repair as they broke last week.

I did all but the last three in time to pick up millennials for swimming. I collected them. We did the post office run as the thing needing mailing was time sensitive. I blew off the small bill until next week, which is fine. I flaked the shoe repair, which is extra stupid as it was literally a place I passed after collecting techie millennial on the way to get head millennial. D'oh! I went to my favorite post office where there was no line. (Most people don't know it is there. it's mostly a sorting depot, and the line is short or non-existence except in November and December. Plus it's an historic building and really pretty inside). It took less than ten minutes even with the hobbling to and from parking.

We stopped so millennials could pick up snacks, and went up to the lake. The over cast day had scared most people away, so the parking was great. There were a ton of ducks and a murder of crows and a lone seagull. Techie Millennial I went in and it was fine. Head Millennial drank coffee and fed birds. We came out when it got choppy and hung out for a while, enjoying bird politics and chatting. It looked like a storm was coming in around five thirty, so we took techie millennial home. Head millennial prepped the kitchen for Stove exchange and made us pancakes to eat while watching what we do in the shadows.

It was a good day. The storm missed us alas, so I still had trouble with my sinuses today, and the sky was cloudless and starting to turn the wrong colour when I took my sandals downtown. It was a massive relief to see a mid-thirties millennial with a nose ring running the counter while the Elderly gentlemen who's run the place since long before I moved here was working in the back. I worried about him during the pandemic and very much hoped he was okay. I also worried there would be no one to take over the trade when the Boomer era shoe repair guy retired. We have lost so much in this town in the last three years. The fish store that was a local institution burned down the Autumn before the plague. A ton of small businesses died in the last two years. This summer, the elderly couple that ran the open air produce store retired and another institution is gone, but there is the tiny shoe repair place and the handmade sweet shop run by an equally ancient couple next door to it was open, though there was no point in me doing more than gaze longingly at it, since I can't chew anything. They survived! Something good survived!

Poor Squirrel is still sleeping on the sofa and occasionally napping in my room in the evening when I'm not using it. The Cats find this deeply disturbing. Tavy keeps Gargoyling on the sofa back to stare at Squirrel while he sleeps and both he and the Empress keeping checking squirrel's room in disbelief off and on all day because he's supposed to be there. Livia has decided to pretend Squirrel is not sleeping in weird places so she ignores him and subtly avoids him when he is in the wrong place.

I am just having a ton of trouble with my body. It is all chronic illness stuff made so much worse by heat and air quality every time I need to leave the safe, filtered bubble of the cat asylum and all the stress and drama around food and my teeth. I keep having to go to bed very early without much warning. I am falling drastically behind again sigh.

My Gothy heart longs for Autumn for all the usual reasons, but also because of all the ways climate change has completely borked the local weather patterns.

* Friday, I stayed up for the 8AM call about the oven arrival time. Initially it had been intended as a morning delivery, but they changed the time to afternoon. I went to bed, knowing that there would be morning forage delivery, a quick drop in by the Head Millennial (who is house sitting nearby and wanted to do a few things), and likely a bunch of phone calls, all of which would wake me. I also got a surprise wake up from Squirrel, who came out to discover Tavy making an escape to; see where Head Millennial had gone. Were they hiding in the bushes? (He knows Millennials come from bushes and the short drop in really confused him). Squirrel needed to check if Livia had escaped. She had not. Livia escaped once in her youth and it was terrifying for her. She was napping in my bed like a good girl. Still checking was absolutely the right thing to do.

There were calls, including the police "charity" scammers who have clearly gotten some new auto-dialer numbers. Sigh. If I got two hours sleep together, I'd be surprised. Forage delivery blocked the door again, but luckily hadn't put them right up against the door (a thing that periodically happens), so I could open far enough to push them away far enough so i could drag them through.

The oven arrived in the hottest part of the day, which was not pleasant for anyone involved, as I had to go out, prop the door, and guide them in, and those poor bastards were trying to work in it, I turned on main room fans and air-conditioning, but the brief trip outside, followed by my frantic cleaning of the under-oven space after they pulled the dead one, very nearly did me in.

I was thirty seconds from getting the last mystery glob off the floor when the phone range and I had to talk squirrel into getting it as I was blocked in by the arriving oven. I intuited it was my social worker, and managed to stop squirrel from telling her to call back later, but rather to wait. I huddled in the space between the small chest freezer where Squirrel keeps his meat and the sink while they pulled the oven forward so I could escape.

I explained about finally finding a dentist willing to do the crown, but they wanted 1700.00 cash up front and told me I should personally bill medicare for reimbursement after. I had tried to tell them that wasn't how it works. They kept insisting they weren't in network for medicare even though that's not how medicare works either. (Not exact wording, but the gist). This was basically the endodontist problem all over. I gave her the dentist contact info and she'll do battle with them next week. who knows. If we are lucky she'll open that dentist for medicare users too, just like she did the endodontist. She is the bureaucratic equivalent of Wonder Woman and she is my best hope for winning a crown before we have to do the root canal all over again.

Let's all hope, shall we.

I needed a bath at this point between sweat and allergens and sticky things that had dripped down the back wall, so i gave squirrel the pre-cooled living room, bathed, and went back to bed. It was clear I was not getting back to sleep, so the cats and I read peaceable for a couple of hours in the nice filtered air. I was nearly done physio when Head Millennial l called needing a ride, which was fine. We chatted while we sorted it out and there are now plans for the Head Millennial to bake me a vegetarian lasagna for Saturday first meal. We are both very excited to try the new oven. (Don't worry, i ran it the requisite recommended time this afternoon to "burn off and leftover manufacturer oils).

Tavy nearly knocked me over when I went to water the plants, still looking for his missing Millennial, Poor Wee Button. The cats did not like workmen and the whole day was made of disruptions, but they've settled down now that everything is normal again. Livia ate her meat, everyone has had pets and snacks. My stomach is full, I am hydrated and medicated, and by the time I went to pick up the millennial, there were normal for summer here clouds and there was a good breeze coming off the bay to chase the heat wave funk away.

All is well at the Cat asylum tonight.

* Saturday, Head Millennial Inaugurated out new and exciting oven with his homemade lasagna. It was delicious. We stayed up talking far too late, as he stayed for dinner after he clocked out. We had gone shopping for ingredients earlier, including to a local market garden, so we had fresh fruit for dessert. He forgot to put the eggplant in, in his excitement, so made pasta sauce with it and some of the onions we got. Omonom nom.

This time it took me two work out the reason I was always hungry, was because about mid-week the clouds of nausea parted so I could actually feel hunger. I don't think I was well enough even with the best nausea management meds on the market to feel hunger since... I'm going to guess late Winter? I'd literally forgotten what appetite felt like. This has happened more and more the last few years. I have adapted. I eat. I suffer through the quease.

Chronic illness life.

It has been so exciting really enjoying food again for a little while.

White supremacists appropriate everything they can, don't they. Makes sense, too. If they allowed original thought, the dupes they ensnare might start figuring out the scam.

And yeah. People tend to forget, but Zelensky is a politician (and showman...) trying to drum up support for his country in the middle of a war. For once I can forgive inflated claims and promises. Who knows, maybe some good things will fall out of this by the end.

Edit: glad to hear you've had better days too, for a change.
