* On Monday Morning last week, I was mid-food prep for last meal when I discovered there was no bread. (I suspect Squirrel raided it in an emergency, which is fair. I don't use a whole loaf generally before it goes bad and i let him snag slices when he's caught short. There was no bread in his area and i always notice when i get low.) There was nothing for it but to venture out to the nearby grocery.
It was 8AMish. It was also an oven out there, which is... wrong. It just doesn't normally get that hot here until past noon, normally. Hell, before climate change fucked the wind patterns up, a whole week of hot days was an anomaly, but we get heat waves here now, despite the cooling from the bay and the Mountains tending to scrape off rain from clouds traveling inland. It's supposed to rain here every couple of days pretty much year round and the vegetation can't correct fast enough to handle long hot dry stretches.
I spent money I really, really shouldn't on bread and fruit, because that's mostly what i want to eat right now. I came home and spent the next two plus hours coughing because pollen doesn't dissipate without rain. I can't get my sleep pattern back and I keep needing naps mid-physio. Wednesday I was supposed to go hang out with the Millennials in the evening, but I was exhausted and sinus headachey and not really up to leaving the heavy filtration in my house.
Squirrel's portable air-conditioner is failing, so he's not really sleeping.
We need Alaska to send us rain.
* Friday, Squirrel tried the sleep on my sofa thing, which worked pretty well for him. I went to bed with a room full of confused cats. According to Squirrel later poor Tavy kept coming to stare at him trying to figure our why he wasn't me and unsure how to proceed. Eventually he settled on me and the three of us went to sleep. (Livia is fond of squirrel, but doesn't handle even small changes well. Squirrel sleeping in the wrong place was alarming to her).
I got a call to go collect a Millennial stranded on a bus route I know would take about an hour and a half to get them where they needed to go, so I ended up padding about the apartment, trying to do things like sneak my sandals from under the table about a foot from squirrel's head without waking him. he's a heavy sleeper, unlike me, but still. There was not a cloud in the sky, which in our micro-climate is unnatural, and the sky was subtly the wrong shade towards the center of town. Too many particulates in the air.
I suited up and like mad dogs and Englishmen headed out until the noon day sun. I did get the Millennial plus gear where they needed to go before their shift started, so all was well on that account, but when I got home I woke squirrel when I dragged the forage delivery boxes in from the porch. He started to drift off back to sleep on being assured I was just getting the food out of the sun and I padded about putting things away while he started to drift back off.
Unfortunately, I was soaked to the sun from the heat and presumably covered with pollen. There was nothing for it but to bathe, which did wake Squirrel all the way up. Poor thing thought I was up for the day and he'd have to slope off to his hot room. I explained about being out rescuing a Millennial in heavy traffic for over an hour and that I was going back to bed as soon as I was clean, and he was asleep again when I went baxck to my room. Tavy was rather distracted by squirrel sleeping in the wrong place again, and Livia managed to get a long uninterrupted solo bed pet, famously the best sort of love in her opinion. she scored two more long pets in the course of the afternoon and evening in between Tavy's cuddle naps.
My sinuses and sleep cycle are still a mess. I sprained a bunch of shoulder muscles earlier in the week literally just trying to prop myself up to turn on the bed light so I could take notes during a phonecall that woke me. The arm collapsed and a screwed up the shoulder. It is still hateful. I do not handle summers well, and I mostly don't come out of my room voluntarily before the night breeze comes.
Dental surgery is Monday. I am still incredibly proud of my Social worker for making this happen not just for me, but for every Medicare patient after me through her admirable stubbornness and patience and willingness to fight.
* Next goal: Working oven. I don't know how much I actually need there as the price fluctuates. Squirrel can't pay his half. I found ones in the 800-1000 range on sale. Who knows where that will be when one or both of us can raise enough for it. I am disabled and medically fragile. Not having a working oven is messing with my nutrition:

* I finished reading The Powers of Darkness, which for those not following Dracula scholarship is the English translation of the Icelandic "translation" of Dracula. They discovered nearly a hundred years after publication that while parts of it are translation, most of it is basically fan fic. (There is a debate about if he had access to an earlier draft or notes from Stoker that I'm not qualified to comment on.) It is a wild ride.
The early section on the way to the castle has some minor divergence, but it goes wildly off on it's own direction shortly after Thomas Harker aka Jonathan Harker arrives at the castle, as in a whole other novel with only small things in common instead of the familiar plot. One of the "brides" is a major character. She and another bride we don't see at the castle have back stories. The castle is full of people/monsters. seriously, it's a wildly different plot.
Somehow it manages to be even more antisemitic and racist than the Stoker. We are talking H.P.Lovecraft levels of queasy making over the top xenophobia. I'm not sorry I read it once for academic interest, but my brain will need a lot of showers to clean the taste of it out levels of ick here, so if you plan to follow in my footsteps, brace yourself. I was braced for the usual Stoker antisemitism and racism against Roma, I was not remotely prepared for this.
Most of the book is Johnathan Harker's dramatically expanded adventures in the castle. I found myself ninety pages from the end and England wasn't even in sight, at which point I began to wonder if Thomas was going to kill Dracula and all the other characters and the rest of the novel would be left out. I was not correct in this guess, but really, the rest of the novel is confusing and half assed.
Basically, the Harker bits of the novel are complex and richly described. We are talking tons more detail about the castle and the people in it and all this extra plot. The rest of the novel reads like cliff notes. It's a warp speed summary, but also has a bunch of extra characters, a completely different plot after the Lucy section, a ton of loose ends and things never properly explained. It has a completely different ending. Also, I'm pretty sure it leaves a whole bunch of vampires just wandering around several European countries including England, and if I didn't know how far this book’s writing predates WWI, this could serve as a supernatural backstory of the rise of fascism in Europe. O.o
Like I don't even know what I just read. Seriously WTF.
Of course, Dracula has never been accurately adapted in movies as far as I know, but still, I keep wondering how weird English language Dracula movies must have been for Icelanders. So many of the characters and more important scenes they'd have known from the book aren't there, because they only exist in the Icelandic version.
I have so many questions, most of which are likely unanswerable.

I don't use a whole loaf generally before it goes bad and i let him snag slices when he's caught short. There was no bread in his area and i always notice when i get low.) There was nothing for it but to venture out to the nearby grocery.
It was 8AMish. It was also an oven out there, which is... wrong. It just doesn't normally get that hot here until past noon, normally. Hell, before climate change fucked the wind patterns up, a whole week of hot days was an anomaly, but we get heat waves here now, despite the cooling from the bay and the Mountains tending to scrape off rain from clouds traveling inland. It's supposed to rain here every couple of days pretty much year round and the vegetation can't correct fast enough to handle long hot dry stretches.
I spent money I really, really shouldn't on bread and fruit, because that's mostly what i want to eat right now. I came home and spent the next two plus hours coughing because pollen doesn't dissipate without rain. I can't get my sleep pattern back and I keep needing naps mid-physio. Wednesday I was supposed to go hang out with the Millennials in the evening, but I was exhausted and sinus headachey and not really up to leaving the heavy filtration in my house.
Squirrel's portable air-conditioner is failing, so he's not really sleeping.
We need Alaska to send us rain.
* Friday, Squirrel tried the sleep on my sofa thing, which worked pretty well for him. I went to bed with a room full of confused cats. According to Squirrel later poor Tavy kept coming to stare at him trying to figure our why he wasn't me and unsure how to proceed. Eventually he settled on me and the three of us went to sleep. (Livia is fond of squirrel, but doesn't handle even small changes well. Squirrel sleeping in the wrong place was alarming to her).
I got a call to go collect a Millennial stranded on a bus route I know would take about an hour and a half to get them where they needed to go, so I ended up padding about the apartment, trying to do things like sneak my sandals from under the table about a foot from squirrel's head without waking him. he's a heavy sleeper, unlike me, but still. There was not a cloud in the sky, which in our micro-climate is unnatural, and the sky was subtly the wrong shade towards the center of town. Too many particulates in the air.
I suited up and like mad dogs and Englishmen headed out until the noon day sun. I did get the Millennial plus gear where they needed to go before their shift started, so all was well on that account, but when I got home I woke squirrel when I dragged the forage delivery boxes in from the porch. He started to drift off back to sleep on being assured I was just getting the food out of the sun and I padded about putting things away while he started to drift back off.
Unfortunately, I was soaked to the sun from the heat and presumably covered with pollen. There was nothing for it but to bathe, which did wake Squirrel all the way up. Poor thing thought I was up for the day and he'd have to slope off to his hot room. I explained about being out rescuing a Millennial in heavy traffic for over an hour and that I was going back to bed as soon as I was clean, and he was asleep again when I went baxck to my room. Tavy was rather distracted by squirrel sleeping in the wrong place again, and Livia managed to get a long uninterrupted solo bed pet, famously the best sort of love in her opinion. she scored two more long pets in the course of the afternoon and evening in between Tavy's cuddle naps.
My sinuses and sleep cycle are still a mess. I sprained a bunch of shoulder muscles earlier in the week literally just trying to prop myself up to turn on the bed light so I could take notes during a phonecall that woke me. The arm collapsed and a screwed up the shoulder. It is still hateful. I do not handle summers well, and I mostly don't come out of my room voluntarily before the night breeze comes.
Dental surgery is Monday. I am still incredibly proud of my Social worker for making this happen not just for me, but for every Medicare patient after me through her admirable stubbornness and patience and willingness to fight.
* Next goal: Working oven. I don't know how much I actually need there as the price fluctuates. Squirrel can't pay his half. I found ones in the 800-1000 range on sale. Who knows where that will be when one or both of us can raise enough for it. I am disabled and medically fragile. Not having a working oven is messing with my nutrition:

* I finished reading The Powers of Darkness, which for those not following Dracula scholarship is the English translation of the Icelandic "translation" of Dracula. They discovered nearly a hundred years after publication that while parts of it are translation, most of it is basically fan fic. (There is a debate about if he had access to an earlier draft or notes from Stoker that I'm not qualified to comment on.) It is a wild ride.
The early section on the way to the castle has some minor divergence, but it goes wildly off on it's own direction shortly after Thomas Harker aka Jonathan Harker arrives at the castle, as in a whole other novel with only small things in common instead of the familiar plot. One of the "brides" is a major character. She and another bride we don't see at the castle have back stories. The castle is full of people/monsters. seriously, it's a wildly different plot.
Somehow it manages to be even more antisemitic and racist than the Stoker. We are talking H.P.Lovecraft levels of queasy making over the top xenophobia. I'm not sorry I read it once for academic interest, but my brain will need a lot of showers to clean the taste of it out levels of ick here, so if you plan to follow in my footsteps, brace yourself. I was braced for the usual Stoker antisemitism and racism against Roma, I was not remotely prepared for this.
Most of the book is Johnathan Harker's dramatically expanded adventures in the castle. I found myself ninety pages from the end and England wasn't even in sight, at which point I began to wonder if Thomas was going to kill Dracula and all the other characters and the rest of the novel would be left out. I was not correct in this guess, but really, the rest of the novel is confusing and half assed.
Basically, the Harker bits of the novel are complex and richly described. We are talking tons more detail about the castle and the people in it and all this extra plot. The rest of the novel reads like cliff notes. It's a warp speed summary, but also has a bunch of extra characters, a completely different plot after the Lucy section, a ton of loose ends and things never properly explained. It has a completely different ending. Also, I'm pretty sure it leaves a whole bunch of vampires just wandering around several European countries including England, and if I didn't know how far this book’s writing predates WWI, this could serve as a supernatural backstory of the rise of fascism in Europe. O.o
Like I don't even know what I just read. Seriously WTF.
Of course, Dracula has never been accurately adapted in movies as far as I know, but still, I keep wondering how weird English language Dracula movies must have been for Icelanders. So many of the characters and more important scenes they'd have known from the book aren't there, because they only exist in the Icelandic version.
I have so many questions, most of which are likely unanswerable.
