* A Word about Monkeypox:

I am seeing a lot of concerning things in recent Monkeypox coverage that is reminiscent of racist and homophobic scaremongering in the '80's and it's really not helpful.

Monkeypox is related to smallpox, can be carried in several species, not just monkeys, and spreads by droplet transmission. You know, like colds, flu, COVID , and a bunch of other things. If you are taking precautions against COVID spread AS YOU SHOULD BE DOING because COVID numbers are rising again, you will likely be fine. Wear a mask! Wash your hands! Don't go to superspreader events like raves! Don't go around breathing on strangers and let them breath on you!

Blaming gay and bisexual men and screaming about STDs makes exactly as much sense as calling the common cold an STD that is magically the fault of queer people. Yes, you can get it during sex because your masks are off and you are breathing on each other. Mmmm.... duh! Implying that Africans are doing inappropriate things with monkeys is incredibly racist and out of the same demonetization manual the right preached out of in the '80's and '90's while people died. it was bullshit then and bullshit now, but it gets engagement, so here we are.

Yes, Monkey pox is serious, though less dangerous than smallpox or COVID. Yes, take precautions: mask wearing, avoiding superspreader events or breathing on people you don't know and vica versa. Yes, isolate for 21 days if you are exposed according to current medical advice. Definitely get medical help if you are running a high fever, and a rash or pox. Take it seriously, but don't buy into forty year old right wing political bullshit.
