Season 5 Utred: Who's the Arseling Now? Is it edward?

Really, I am still grumpy about them diminishing RL Aethelflaed's awesomeness to make Gary Stu Utred bigger, but over all the series was extremely satisfying in the way Vikings absolutely wasn't. I am okay with changes dragging Æthelred the Unredey backwards a century through time to replace Aethelflaed's rl supportive, but barely in the historical record husband for the dramas. i knew going in that it was based on the novels I read and only half remember from when I was a kid. I wasn't expecting accuracy, and it still managed to do better in that area than Vikings from the History Channel. I loved their Alfred the great particularly.

Squirrel: What are you watching? Is that Vikings?

Me: No. I finished that...Last year maybe? This is the Last Kingdom. It's better than Vikings.

Squirrel: I really liked Vikings. I only watched the first two seasons.

Me: That is likely why you liked it. I loved the first three seasons. Downhill from there. The final season make me so angry I could stab someone.

Squirrel: I saw pictures online of Ivar the Boneless. People seem to really like him.

Me: He was very popular. There were a bunch of later season characters I liked, like Ubbe, but the writing was a mess and the plot was all over the place. the ending offended me personally both as a viewer and former fan and a medievalist. The Last Kingdom has a lot of the same stuff: Overlapping time period, only vague connection to historical fact, large, multigeneralional saga, but it has a coherent narrative thrust and a satisfying arc. It works better as a whole even if the first few seasons of Vikings were better than early Last Kingdom.

Squirrel: Huh. Well I'm watching the viking Valhalla thing now.

Me: I plan to watch that soon. It's on my list.

I don't think I'd be as angry at Vikings if they hadn't been so good early on. I don't think I'd have been as angry if they hadn't ruthlessly queerbaited. (I would have been happy with Ragnar/Floki and/or Ragnar/Aethalstan both of which would have made narrative and character sense. Yes they gave us Lagertha/Astrid, but it was to little to late and look what they did to poor Astrid. Just saying). They promised me things they went out of their way not to deliver.

The Last Kingdom never promised me anything it didn't plan to deliver. It was super straight, but I knew that going in. It was historically inaccurate, but I knew that going in. Like Vikings it was pretty and captured period feel well. Both shows had some stand out acting, but also were uneven as far as acting for some of the smaller rolls. Last Kingdom had no one as cool as Floki or Ragnar, but I really loved their Alfred and I can name a dozen characters I actually cared about off the top of my head as easily as I can for Vikings. The Last Kingdom promised me a particular kind of story and delivered it in consistently satisfying ways despite a quibble or to. Vikings promised me the moon and gave me dregs.

* I dreamed I was leading my family dead west through the Tunnel of Lost Things. Among the lost things was a book. It was over a hundred years old, with a beautifully embossed leather binding. it was a two sided book, like those old Ace Paperbacks. At first I thought it was an old abridged Latin to English Dictionary, but it turned out it was also a poem. Each entry was the next line of the poem, while also defining or at least suggesting the definition of the Latin word in English.

Flipping it over, it was an English to Latin Dictionary. It was also a Poem, but not the same one. It was instead the same love story from the other side, all in beautiful iambic pentameter while still serving as a dictionary.

* This was my first year I got to watch the semi-finals and the final in Eurovision in toto rather than watching a handful of recommended clips on Youtube. I'm super new at this and I was really excited to find two channels showing it this year. Keep in mind it's all newbie opinion and personal taste.

I feel like Switzerland did not understand the assignment. Like, he's an excellent singer, but not for Eurovision. Like the song had a really good message even, but it's just a super plain presentation, not a Eurovision spectacle.

I told Squirrel earlier if he only watches one thing, it should be Subwoofer. I adore this.

Italy's good for a ballad, but I'm not big on the ballads.

I still think Ukraine is good in it's own right. I love when people use their own language and it's a banger. The mix of flute with rap, break dancing with folk dancing. I love this.

I'm still angry Latvia and San Marino got cut. :(

I've lost track of whom I'm watching. Classic '90's boy band dancing? (Apparently this was Belgium).

(My friend said they couldn't remember Greece). Me: No, that was the performance.

Oh man, Iceland brought cowgirls!

Moldova still stunning and one of my semi-final favorites. They understood the assignment: Weird fusion music style (approving)? Check. Weird outfits? Check. Crowd singing along? Check....

Man I love Australia. That is how you Eurovision a ballad! (Why don't I have more of the ballads in the recap? Most of the comments were along the lines of "Yawn)."

Great Britain is happening on the TV now. I suppose. Sigh.

Poland's another one with a brilliant song but not a Eurovision performance. At least he brought dancers.

Ooo! Serbia's mental health awareness one is up! So Goood!

Estonia was charming. Good message. Excellent song. Not Eurovision enough.

For the record: Ukraine was legitimately one of the best five in there and I'm very happy they won. I'm just grumpy most of the other ones I thought were also my favorites so low.
