* How did I spend my Birthday? Getting up way too early to go to the dentist. I was so exhausted I fell asleep sitting upright in the waiting room. after my probing, I ran a few errands, got my free Starbucks, and came home to find Tavy bouncing off the walls.

He'd showed signs of improvement right before bedtime. The long sleep had clearly done him good. Between lung time and my coming to bed after bathing, he'd gorged himself and blerped all over my bed, which is a thing he does when getting over an intestinal ailment. There were a couple of small blerps on the floor when I got home from the dentist, but litter seemed normal and he was back to his characteristic kibble nibbling. he was also clearly trying to make up for all the activity he missed over the weekend.

So much snuggling and play and attempts to escape to check the bushes for his Millenials. I think he was upset he hadn't been able to properly enjoy head millennial over the weekend. Squirrel knocked over and likely killed one of the last tomato plants producing for the season trying to get out the door without the Tiny Terror. It was a nightmare trying to water the plants and collect basil for dinner and such while trying to repeatedly catch and return him.

Tavy is sure the Millenials are hiding behind the bushes when they aren't here and doesn't understand why they can't just all live here. he did eventually calm down in time for the evening group nap with Livia.

So he's on the mend. I still out to try to take him to the cat dentist for a cleaning at some point, but I'm skint and likely will be tight until at least March.

* On Saturday we had my party. (Everyone vaxxed and masked except to eat and drink. We held it at a friend's place as my apartment is too small.) It was potluck, and some old friends came up. No candles, because covid, but I got my usual tuxedo cake with purple icing and a big skull in the middle. I mulled cider as well.

We do Secret Pumpkins, because I think it is way more fun for everyone to have something to open, so everyone get's a match and gifts for me are optional. One of my friends wasn't sure they could make it, so they mailed a present in advance. normally, I open family gifts on my birthday, but as I couldn't be sure which parcel was correct, I brought them all along. There were also cider donuts from further south, a thing I particularly like. I need to work out and thank whoever sent: Halloween pro-mask tee shirt, tim tams, and a cool fortune teller decoration. Gifts from the actual party: A super soft black cat plush from my Pumpkin, fairy lights, stickers, and a hand made soft maple leaf thing that could be either an ornament or a cat toy.

There was one parking spot and assorted people who needed rides, so they dropped me, my stuff, and a couple of people at my place while other ferrying was happening, and then we switched so I could hang out with my oldest continuous friend while the other out of town ferried people about. (Squirrel had to get ready for work, and the other two drivers were me and the out of town friend. Out of town friends know local friends. The arrangement wasn't as weird as it looks). Tavy knows all these people and during the visit reached the blinky eyes stage with oldest continuous friend, who he mostly only knows as a voice on zoom, which was massive for him.

I had the box of gifts on my desc to so I could sort them after everyone was gone. Tavy went over to investigate the box. Excitedly he started digging, and I was like, what has git him so worked up. He fished out the maple leaf thing and started playing with it right away, so clearly it is a toy and not an ornament. He has also already bitten the little black cat thing. After everyone left, I tossed the leaf thing into Livia's Happy Place (The artist formally known as scratchy thing box. She was absolutely delighted to discover it there, so that was a win.

It was a good day.

* Sunday and Monday I spent eating leftovers and working on clearing the link backlog so I could post the aggregate. I also dragged myself out Sunday to put ten dollars from my wallet back in the bank to cover fees. (I needed 5 dollars last week for household supplies and the ATM only gives out multiples of twenty. I'd meant to go back after buying the thing I needed, but I forgot until the autowithdraw car insurance reminder turned up. The account should be all right, but there will be no Halloween feast for me. (I usually set aside a little money so I can get pizza or take out for Halloween as I have so much else I need to do for Samhain, but them's the breaks. I had a bunch of small extra expenses this much to the point I didn't get to do my discount Halloween lights and decoration tour either, and I've a package I owe, I can't afford to mail.)

They seemed to waste a lot of time on the boring shitty white guy’s journey from shitty to slightly less shitty, when I’m pretty sure the people going to see it were there to see Lupita Nyong’o be a Goddess.

That said? It absolutely delivered on the Lupita Nyong’o be a Goddess bits and really utilized her range. I came to watch Lupita Nyong’o fight zombies and take no shit from shitty male adult characters while trying to save her students, and they delivered that.

Is it high art no. Is it as heart rendingly brilliant and accurate about teaching and schools as Mira Grant’s brilliant “The Day the Dead Came to show and Tell?” Fuck no. How could it possibly be?

But it was a solid zombie movie and I think it did a great job on the why I, a retired middle school teacher, think Kindergarten teachers deserve combat pay. That is one of the hardest jobs in a school even on a good day, and they got that weird alchemy that makes a good Kindergarten teacher just right.

I just wish they’d had the sense to make Miss Christine the main character and center it from her point of view dealing with children, zombies, and extremely childish adult men, instead of wasting all that time on trying to make us care about two man babies having boring and predictable character arcs no one would care about.
