* Saturday, we bought too much food. My refrigerator is full of things I can eat cold and my house is full of fresh fruit and vegetables. :)

Annoyingly, the ideal HOA approved portable is gone, gone gone, along with all it's high rated peers. Still an appropriate unit is on order. Specs and reviews look reasonable. Let's hope it's not a lemon, because this is the only reasonable option left.

I ate the first tomato from the garden today: small, heirloom, perfectly ripe. I ate it like it was an apple.

* Sunday we went to the lake for a picnic and swimming. We lucked out and a spot in the full lot freed up really close to the entrance just before our arrival.

Last time I rescued a run away inter tube going at speed towards lake center. This time there were two little dudes in life jackets who were very clearly not allowed to cross the rope into the deeps where we were swimming who lost an inflatable the size and shape of a soccer ball. Picture sad little faces as they watched their toy zoom away on wind and tide never to be seen again.

We all rushed over to try to catch it, but the caregiver millenial was in a turtle tube and his wake kept pushing it further out. I managed to maneuver around him, at which point, my ancient soccer goalie instincts kicked in. I launched myself on top of it, pinning it like a gang of bullies were about to group kick my arms and ribs in the hopes of making a goal.

I had no wake, coming from above and my ball pinning skills kept it from spurting out to freedom. I have not played since the '80's; I didn't even think. In retrospect, this is probably when I pulled my calf muscle and fucked up my dinosaur arm but good.

By this time the older of the little boys had decided to take whatever punishment his parents were going to mete out for disobeying swim safety rules and had made it about two feet. i tried to give him the ball, but he backed up terrified of some scary white middle aged stranger coming at him in a pandemic, which is fair enough. I ended up tossing it to his little brother, and the two of them high tailed it further in away from the divider rope.

I was exhausted and in pain missed the explosions, if any.

* Today sucked. Bonus fire.

So they are doing an annual cleaning and maintenance thing at the Complex which means people have to move their cars. Neither of our official slots are effected, but the guy we share my slot with has been parked there so... yeah. I lucked out Sunday and got reasonably close street parking. Problem is, I've not healed and ever step I take feels like getting stabbed in the calf. I hobbled out there because we got a flyer saying they were reopening the forage style where we can just take what we need instead of delivering stuff we mostly can't. I'm full vax and have a paid helper now, so it'll still be rough on me physically, but I won't be trying to balance a full forage box on my head with my extremely fucked up arm while I gimp painfully a couple of blocks each way because there is not enough disabled parking. I still wouldn't have told my caregiver Millennial to meet me there if I knew I had pulled my muscle, but when we made the plan, I thought i just had a leg cramp.

So I got up early and dragged my self out and.... it's not until next week. *facepalm* I wasn't convinced I could physically manage in person forage, so luckily hadn't cancelled food boxes. No Millenial, and it occurred to me, he might have gone to the other temp forage location so I went there, it also being near the bus and it being possible he might have checked his phone and gone there. No Millenial and it was the prepackaged boxes, and the usual are coming friday. He wasn't at that busd station. I drove down to the library, forgetting I was 15 minutes late for summer hours. D'oh! He wasn't at the downtown hub either.

At this point, I should have gone back and checked location one, but I am an idiot. I scored parking in front of the finished building which was lucky as there was no parking for a couple of blocks and my leg was on fire at this point and I was exhausting. I checked the machine. No message. He did turn up eventually, poor thing, having called but not left messages, and after waiting way longer than I wait for anybody. I told him I wasted his time and he had an exhausting, emotionally distressing two hours, so that looked like work he should be paid for it to me. The fact we had nothing to show for it was my fault not his. He showed up for work on time. So I got him to take his break and then he worked his ass off the rest of shift, because he's sweet like that.

So I take him home, knowing full well all the parking will likely be gone, except my shared spot was empty! I could have a reasonably limp to the apartment instead of parking blocks away!

I'm pulling in, when I see and smell the smoke. Some asshole smoker had lazily set the landscaping bark on fire instead of, you know, putting his cigarette out. It a drought. It had likely been smoldering away for hours, spreading invisible under the dust and was now going good. Fuck! I tried to get help from the close apartments, but no one answered. I couldn't find the key to the close door on my ring. (Physio made me split my ring. I'd have had to find the other half and there was a ton of smoke and it was close to my car full of gasoline and every minute it spread a little more.

So I went around to the patio, and woke squirrel, since I can only carry one bucket at a time and it was a fucking fire emergency and every step was like being stabbed and I just can't gimp that fast. It took a bunch of trips to put out because we needed to get the invisible part of the fire and not just the parts we could see.

I called it in to the management company because someone needs to remind the smokers not to set the landscaping on fire and so we don't get charged for the fire damage because it was right next to my slot. Honestly, I'm betting the guy we share with set the fire before driving away to wherever he went this afternoon. The other slot adjacent to the fire's been empty all week, whereas that guy left probably left sometime after three and five hours sounds right for a cigarette to become a real fire, but I didn't say that to Management, just that I'd pulled up and found it and we'd managed to put it out. I should go out and check again once it's dark to see if I can spot stray sparks.

I just feel like it would be a lot easier for smokers not to carelessly start fires than it is for a disabled person and a guy with a bad back to carry bucket after bucket from our apartment on the other side of the building, but then I'm not a smoker. After all, these are people who enjoy illegally clustering in front of shop doors so that when I step out I collapse because I can't breathe, being, you know, a lung patient. Smokers always think their convenience is far more important than the health of strangers with disabilities.

I get that it's an addiction, but vape exists. Vape doesn't start fires or make me cough until I pass out and or piss myself if you stand too close to a door or window. You have a right to harm yourself, but I honestly don't understand why it gives you a right to set fires wherever you like and physically harm other people.

Update: I gimped another bucket out once it was dark enough for embers to stand out. Squirrel had taken the last bucket out, and had followed directions to the letter about soaking the outer rim ahead of where we thought the fire ended. He then stirred the ashes and neighboring bark looking for sparks. No sparks or embers in sight when I checked, but I spread an extra bucket's worth just in case. The smell was nasty, but I do think it's sorted.
