"SCOTUS has become the place where voting rights go to die, so it was no surprise when the justices gave South Carolina most of what it wanted on Monday. With no noted dissents, the court let the state reimpose the witness rule—although, as usual for a shadow docket case, it didn’t explain its decision. Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote a concurring opinion citing the notorious Purcell principle, which holds that courts should not alter voting laws in the runup to an election. But the lower courts did not actually alter the voting procedures currently in place; they simply preserved the status quo, since the witness requirement has been suspended since May. It was the Supreme Court that changed the status quo on Monday by imposing the witness requirement less than one month from Election Day, violating the principle that Kavanaugh claimed to vindicate."

* So I’ve written a number of things since last March about current parallels with the waves of Plague between 1357 and 1665, plus some of the more modern outbreaks. I’ve also been thinking off and on about the Plague of Athens back during the Peloponnesian War (430-426 BCE), but I didn’t get around to writing about it.

Since 45 started going around deliberately spreading COVID last week, I’ve been thinking more about it a lot. We have no real idea what it was, because it was so incredibly virulent it burned itself out. There are may guesses as to what modern disease(s) it might be related to, but we literally don’t know.

To my way of thinking the passages Thucydides wrote abut it is some of the most powerful writing I’ve seen about any plague ever. There is this almost clinical tone as he describes the horrors of it, and he doesn’t reveal until the end that he had it, which somehow makes it all the more chilling. It wasn’t just the deadliness of it, though it was incredibly deadly, killing 75,000-100,000 in Athens alone ad who knows many others in African and western Asia. This in a city State under siege in the middle of a long devastating war that was already decimating them. It wasn’t just the death itself, it was so much bigger.

It was incredibly fucking contagious, so after a while people were afraid to tend the sick, who were left to die alone, thirsty and covered in their own filth. (This has happened with the COVID pandemics in nursing homes, patients left to die because no one was willing to come close enough to feed them, staff fleeing to the point there was no one to care for the patients inside, both in the Us and Spain). Funeral rites broke down, wood for pyres stolen by other families, mass burnings and mass graves. There were so many dead and dying that the temples overflowed with them. I keep thinking about all the hospitals that ran out of room this year, all the people who died at home or in hotel rooms because there was no room even in the field hospitals, the funeral Home in New York so full they just kept staking bodies as they rotted. Right now, as I write this a lot of hospitals are full.

They turned violently against refugees from the outlying districts and foreigners, xenophobia turning deadly. Sound familiar?

I think too of the behavior of the sick, delirium or psychosis combined with simple thirst leading them to throw themselves into the water supply, contaminating it, spreading it faster, since the water wasn’t safe.

I think of 45, grandiose and possibly manic from the medicine and/or impaired by low oxygen levels and/or the neurological effects of the disease itself as well has his own malignant narcissism and/or sociopathy deliberately infecting staff, supporters, secret service, everyone he could force into his infection range and people just letting him do it because he’s president. I think if I were a danger to myself and others, someone would try to stop me.

It was an ugly, ugly way to die, different from Covid, but right up there on my list of things I never want to experience personally. He described it all in detail, himself a lucky survivor.

And the Plague of Athens caused permanent damage in a lot of survivors beyond the obvious psychological damage of living through a trauma like that. People lost fingers, toes, and penises. People went permanently blind. Some people suffered serious brain damage.

Right now there are so many people with new heart conditions, or lung scaring, or lingering neurological effects that they may or may not recover from.

I just… look at that footage of him whipping off his mask to infect people knowing he’s wildly contagious and I think of those people throwing themselves into cisterns and the plague spreading on and on leaving mourning and devastation in its wake that so many survivors may never recover from. I think of rabid dogs trying to bite.

* By popular request things I wrote about bread and mincemeat in a thread about food in Cornwall circa 1707 (I'm responding to some specific points, hence the reference to gentiles as someone else was doing Jewish bread traditions. Penmarth is the fictional town in Trelawney MUSH). Mild editing to combine posts and for copy editing purposes.:

1. For the Gentiles at least, Bread is a class issue: Generally the whiter and finer ground your wheat flour is, the richer you are. If you are comfortable, but not rich it's generally brown. There are definitely degrees of brown vs. pale and your flour gets priced accordingly. Generally people eating rye are poorer. Savory oatcakes are staples for people who can't afford wheat on a regular basis, because oats are cheaper. If you are eating things like barley cakes you are either very poor or there's a famine one. If your bread is so soft and fresh and fine you can tear it easily with your fingers you are rich. Everyone else, use a knife.

When there are grain shortages, shift lower. You are more likely generally to have a serious wheat shortage than a rye, oats, or barley shortage. Again, adjust down for things like late winter or early spring when supplies are low. Adding seeds and the like is a way to stretch your limited supply. Basically it's the inverse of the late 20th century and afterwards.

You can definitely bake bread in a large fireplace with the right equipment. My Grandmother was a volunteer re-enactor at Valley Forge before it got Nationalized and I used to watch her do it. I've since seen bread and stew making in 18th century hearths in other Pennsylvania area historical monuments that weren't nationalized as an adult. These are those big walk in sized hearths, not tiny modern fireplaces.

People have been cutting flour with fillers since bread was invented. Certainly there is a large about of material from the medieval period on as guilds and later governmental authorities tried to stop people adulterating flour and bread, even as millers and bakers tried to circumvent the laws and regulations. All sorts of tricks for shorting customers like putting the thumb on the scales, shaving weights, are preserved in documents. Humans are humans are humans.

Note for Americans: Locals would say corn where Americans say grain. Corn is the generic word for stuff you can make flour out of basically. Settlers in the Americas ran into this weird stuff the locals ground up for flour, and rather than adopting one of the words from one of the various indigenous languages they just called it the generic word English for stuff you can make flour out of. People in England had no reason to switch.

2. I wanted to mention savory mincemeat pie as we are moving into the slaughtering season. Sweet modern mincemeat wasn't a thing yet. Modern mincemeat evolved slowly over the course of the mid-18th -19th out of the kind of pies they'd be making in Penmarth in slaughtering season, but we are too early for that.
So there is this massive autumn slaughtering of surplus animals mentioned above. You eat some fresh, You preserve what you can as mentioned above. you inevitably end up with bits. You make your sausages, sure, but you also make mincemeat pies. See the bit above about fat and flour for your crusts. You make the crusts extra thick, because you are about to make 6 months or so of pies all at once. No really. The crust is there to keep the contents from spoiling. do it right and they can be good up to a year, but trust me no one wants so be eating last Autumns now rather dodgy mince pies in summer. Four to six months is more reasonable. This is a lot like stew as described above. You have your meat bits (likely mutton around Penmarth, beef being more expensive and less plentiful, though both are fine), and your suet and whatever random fruit you might have lying around, particularly any older dried fruit you want to use up to make way for the stuff you are preserving or have preserved over the summer. You mix it up with salt, pepper, and anything fancier you might have along the lines of clove, cinnamon, or nutmeg and alcohol. Brandy is best, but if you don't have it you want something that fits the flavor profile. The only sweet in this period is going to be the fruit. (They start adding sugar later in the century and they get sweeter and more fruity over time until you have mostly fruit and little or no meat.)

It is very traditional to have mince pie for the Christmas season, and it is slightly sweet from the fruit, but in our period it's still a main course and if you have a lot of them you can keep eating them until they run out, but since the alcohol and spices are expensive, it's better off households who can do that. People really did very much want them in season so if you are poor you try to at least have one for Christmas, Even working class people will save up to make some, and it's certainly something people not rich enough to have means of baking for themselves would make at home and pay a baker to bake. Again how much and quality is a class issue. Scale accordingly

With mince pie, you can get them personal size. You can get them in weird shapes still, but they are mostly round again by now. The weird shaped ones are old fashioned, stuff a grandmother might make. The reason they preserve well is you've soaked the innards in alcohol then closed them up with a thick crust to keep the air out. If they have holes, eat those first. They are very, very, filling.
