* Thursday: We needed to do a last flea treatment for the last week. I sincerely hope this is the last one ever. When we moved here, we dosed the previous clowder, but we never needed flea meds after. This is an advantage of having no carpets and indoor only cats. Occasionally a flea will travel in on someone's trouser leg or the like, but I wash bedding frequently and cats are good groomers as a group. There are no carpets to harbor insects easily.
We had the misfortune of Elder Kitty's repeated escape attempts coinciding with her barely grooming anymore and some of the best flea breeding weather in years. It was very lucky I'd used the stimulus to stock pile cat food, as all of July's cat food money went to buying more flea meds.
Dosing them is a two person job, so it has to happen when I remember and squirrel is up and wandering around the common areas. If possible, I like to do it when Livia is in the main room as I've been trying not to scare her off her bed. In this case, i decided to dose them after the Great Pissing, because it's a thing they don't like, so Tavy might take it for a punishment. he wa easy to catch and dose. the hard part was persuading him to let go of the human, as he needs reassurance after a dosing. To my horror, Baby girl was innocently asleep at the head of the bed on my pillow pile, the cruelest place to attack her and also one where she had time to work out it was coming, making her harder to catch.
With the deterioration in my arms and her size and extremely muscular boy. I had a hell of a time holding her pinned to the bed long enough for squirrel to zap her. Still, it's done and let us hope I don't need to sacrifice this month's cat food for more. The last of elder kitty's fleas seem to have hatched and been killed. I haven't found any on my legs in most of a week, and the infestation on the cats was tiny before dosing. *digits cruciform*
Instead of being terrified of me for a couple of days, Livia is skittish and resentful, but she climbed right on me for her bed time love and actually fell asleep on me, which is rare. I was so loathe to disturb her I sacrificed an extra hour of sleep for her sake, poor sweet thing.
I woke to a fine urine sample on the sofa tarp, which I expected. He pretty much always pisses there after a dosing. It was of reasonable size and the color was correct for a cat, so I'm thinking maybe dirt or some of the wood stain came up, alarming me yesterday. It's a relief. I can stop panicking that he's developing urinary problems. as a side note, it tirns out I can wash a cheap plastic tarp on the delicate cycle and hang dry it, instead of trying to do it by hand.
Today was curbside, so after a few hours sleep I dragged myself out and to the library. I then bought another damned tarp and a pint of touch up paint. I needed the paint anyway for the bathroom, and i had a birthday coupon for Ace so the tarp was free if I bought another thing. (You can't buy a five dollar thing with a five dollar coupon. You need to actually pay them for something, as I knew from experience.)
I got home and washed up, greeted cats, fed Baby girl, switched last night's second load. (Cleaning the sofa plus the pillow cases I'd changed out the night before and other random laundry was two loads. I switched tarps and started the dirty one. The bottom piss guard layer was dry, so I layered that on top of the tarp. I've worked out a system with tarp and the spare pad to better protect the sofa back and arms, which i cleaned again before covering. It'll be fine until someone makes another oops at the living room litter box or on the sofa/coffee table, and I have to wash a piss pad with no replacement, but October-December is an expensive time of year and either I buy kibbles this month or more washable piss pads, not both. Until then the cats and I will have to deal with tarping. (Tavy and I hate the tarp, but can make do; Livia is terrified of the sounds it makes, so no sofa back lounging for her until I can buy more piss pads).
I also changed a tank,did more laundry and cleaning stuff. I need to rewash a bunch of things I rescued and cursory washed last night, because they are Not Clean Enough from the smell, and clean up all the things Tavy spent the last week knocking off the living room table before he pisses on them, but I'm so out of spoons I'm weepy, so not tonight.
* Saturday: The air quality is really bad and I've been coughing up gunk. I couldn't be out of my room late enough to finish the Thursday/Friday combined post, though I did get a ton of things scaffolded. It wasn't really safe to be out of my room still at evening, so i went back to sleep, then lolled around reading and watching Netfluix until the indoor quality was good enough to risk coming out, which was past 1AM it's still not great. I'm coughing chunks from watering the plants.

* Thursday: We needed to do a last flea treatment for the last week. I sincerely hope this is the last one ever. When we moved here, we dosed the previous clowder, but we never needed flea meds after. This is an advantage of having no carpets and indoor only cats. Occasionally a flea will travel in on someone's trouser leg or the like, but I wash bedding frequently and cats are good groomers as a group. There are no carpets to harbor insects easily.
We had the misfortune of Elder Kitty's repeated escape attempts coinciding with her barely grooming anymore and some of the best flea breeding weather in years. It was very lucky I'd used the stimulus to stock pile cat food, as all of July's cat food money went to buying more flea meds.
Dosing them is a two person job, so it has to happen when I remember and squirrel is up and wandering around the common areas. If possible, I like to do it when Livia is in the main room as I've been trying not to scare her off her bed. In this case, i decided to dose them after the Great Pissing, because it's a thing they don't like, so Tavy might take it for a punishment. he wa easy to catch and dose. the hard part was persuading him to let go of the human, as he needs reassurance after a dosing. To my horror, Baby girl was innocently asleep at the head of the bed on my pillow pile, the cruelest place to attack her and also one where she had time to work out it was coming, making her harder to catch.
With the deterioration in my arms and her size and extremely muscular boy. I had a hell of a time holding her pinned to the bed long enough for squirrel to zap her. Still, it's done and let us hope I don't need to sacrifice this month's cat food for more. The last of elder kitty's fleas seem to have hatched and been killed. I haven't found any on my legs in most of a week, and the infestation on the cats was tiny before dosing. *digits cruciform*
Instead of being terrified of me for a couple of days, Livia is skittish and resentful, but she climbed right on me for her bed time love and actually fell asleep on me, which is rare. I was so loathe to disturb her I sacrificed an extra hour of sleep for her sake, poor sweet thing.
I woke to a fine urine sample on the sofa tarp, which I expected. He pretty much always pisses there after a dosing. It was of reasonable size and the color was correct for a cat, so I'm thinking maybe dirt or some of the wood stain came up, alarming me yesterday. It's a relief. I can stop panicking that he's developing urinary problems. as a side note, it tirns out I can wash a cheap plastic tarp on the delicate cycle and hang dry it, instead of trying to do it by hand.
Today was curbside, so after a few hours sleep I dragged myself out and to the library. I then bought another damned tarp and a pint of touch up paint. I needed the paint anyway for the bathroom, and i had a birthday coupon for Ace so the tarp was free if I bought another thing. (You can't buy a five dollar thing with a five dollar coupon. You need to actually pay them for something, as I knew from experience.)
I got home and washed up, greeted cats, fed Baby girl, switched last night's second load. (Cleaning the sofa plus the pillow cases I'd changed out the night before and other random laundry was two loads. I switched tarps and started the dirty one. The bottom piss guard layer was dry, so I layered that on top of the tarp. I've worked out a system with tarp and the spare pad to better protect the sofa back and arms, which i cleaned again before covering. It'll be fine until someone makes another oops at the living room litter box or on the sofa/coffee table, and I have to wash a piss pad with no replacement, but October-December is an expensive time of year and either I buy kibbles this month or more washable piss pads, not both. Until then the cats and I will have to deal with tarping. (Tavy and I hate the tarp, but can make do; Livia is terrified of the sounds it makes, so no sofa back lounging for her until I can buy more piss pads).
I also changed a tank,did more laundry and cleaning stuff. I need to rewash a bunch of things I rescued and cursory washed last night, because they are Not Clean Enough from the smell, and clean up all the things Tavy spent the last week knocking off the living room table before he pisses on them, but I'm so out of spoons I'm weepy, so not tonight.
* Saturday: The air quality is really bad and I've been coughing up gunk. I couldn't be out of my room late enough to finish the Thursday/Friday combined post, though I did get a ton of things scaffolded. It wasn't really safe to be out of my room still at evening, so i went back to sleep, then lolled around reading and watching Netfluix until the indoor quality was good enough to risk coming out, which was past 1AM it's still not great. I'm coughing chunks from watering the plants.
