- 7.17 Masks.

I couldn't write this up while watching, so it's cursory. This is another really memorable one, and is fun, even though it doesn't particularly make sense, as in, I have a hole lot of never to be answered qu4estions about the plot holes.

It starts with a sculpting class where Deanna is trying to help kids express feelings in their work. Data is having a hard time with the feelings/imagination part of the assignment. They are scanning a giant comet. Deanna discovers a weird Aztec looking object in her room with a bunch of symbols on it. Next class data sculpts a mask with a similar symbol on it, supposedly from his imagination, but it turns out ship's computer is infected with alien symbology. Data is too and translates the symbols. The ship is replicating more ritual objects in the same style.

They blast away the outer layer of the comet and find an archive from a long dead civilization inside. Data's brain gets changed into archive stuff and he starts channeling assorted people from the archive. Mr. Spinner's acting of this part is excellent. There are nice little touches like his chest plate sigils changing for each personality. The ship starts transforming into an aliren city.

The people inside Data are scared of/in awe of The Goddess queen, who has a sun symbol and is associated with Deanna. it takes them ages to work out that the guy they reference as chasing her and the only one she'll listen to is the moon, despite it being dead obvious. Picard has them manifest the temple of the Goddess and Deanna turns into her. Picard decks himself out as the moon god and talks her into going to sleep, ending the peril. They send archaeologists to examine it properly.

I had fun with it, but I have a lot of why and how questions.
