* This is from a discussion of Historically Accurate vs. Inaccurate portrayals of the Middle Ages in fandom Spaces I had elsewhere, Including one of my jousting things.:
There is no stopping other people from using forks in medieval settings, but I stubbornly always pose mine eating with fingers off a shared trencher and the like. I'd just keep doing accurate feast stuff I learned doing research back in grad school and you could tell who was paying attention because they'd pick up medieval table manners from me. I was that person who kept refusing to pose new world foods, and who loved descing real medieval feast foods.
On a late medieval game I played, I kept insisting on posing going to change out of my jousting armor into more sensible armour for general melee, etc.. I noticed other people starting to do it too after a few tourneys.
I was also that asshole with the rant about how for most of tourney history they were free range war games and a team sport with aggressive recruiting of top athletes and that thing we think of as tourney jousting is basically a very late development after tourneys had become nearly irrelevant, but that it is a lot cheaper to film Tudor era jousting than real jousting and also more dramatic, so that's what we get on film.
[It was at this point my interlocutor cleverly asked if it followed a pro-wrestling trajectory where they realized over time that making it more dramatic and simultaneously less of a death risk led to more spectator friendly one on one jousting.]
You aren't wrong at all.
Keep in mind it was very much a pro athlete situation from square one, with a handful of big pro teams with expensive recruiting practices to attract the best players. You also had free knights who would band together to compete in a particular tourney, because a lone knight was basically fucked. These guys were generally younger sons who owned little more than Armour, weapons, and a horse or two. The goal was to capture as many guys and horses as you could to basically ransom and hope your prowess would attract the attention of one of the lords with a pro team. You'd get adopted into their household and you could get very rich at it, if you were very, very good and extremely lucky. William Marshal started out as one of those younger sons with the horse, arms, and armour, was good enough to spark bidding wars and poaching attempts he could leverage for more goodies, used his in with the then heir to Henry II (who predeceased his father) for wider political power, got heavily involved in throne wars (Richard hated him), ended up married to an heiress with a bunch of kids and owning a quarter of Ireland. Most guys though? Barely eked out a living and were one loss or serious injury away from penury and at best a career as an outlaw or merc, at worse dead or a begger.
It was incredibly expensive to host early tourneys. You had the cost of attracting and maintaining a team. How had the prizes to furnish that needed to be big enough to attract other pro-teams and enough randos to make up one or more extra teams. You had the hospitality you were expected to offer and you couldn't afford to look stingy to the other big Dukes and Princes and the like. The tourney grounds themselves needed to be large with lots of good landscape features for tactics and stratagems. You needed to be able to to ambushes and the like. This means you are about to destroy a village and it's output for the year because bits of in may get knocked over or burned and the surrounding fields trampled. (the villagers were evacuated for the duration, but you can easily imagine how they might have felt about it). You needed a village in there because war games, basically, and places they were like to be fighting real wars would have them, so including them for tactical reasons makes sense if you are that level of rich and thus uncaring of serf feelings and livelihoods.
The early tourneys were about keeping your elite fighting unit sharp and battle honed, and hopefully discouraging the other guys rich and powerful enough to form pro teams from invading your lands because they do not want to fight your guys with real sharpened weapons.
It was hugely fucking expensive and there's a reason England's only pro team played nearly all away games in France for literally centuries. Like an English tourney was rare as fuck and they only did it for really big things, usually when they were not only celebrating something massive, but also when they were hoping to impress a continental power.
We are talking 5-7 tourneys on the circuit total in a "good" year when there wasn't a major war on in France or the like.
I can not possibly underline the expense enough.
So eventually tech changes made heavy cavalry less important in land warfare in the fifteenth century. Like you needed them, but cannon and longbows shifted the balance. Full on tourney's were super expensive. Stuff like waves of yersinsa pestis and other epidemics had dramatically lowered the population to 900 levels by 1400, causing massive economic upheaval. France and England were sporadically at war for most of the 14th and the early 15th, which way cut down on tourneys even in non plague years. Live if the English army is devastating Normandy right now, you definitely don't hold tourneys in the north and at least half the tourney teams are in the field, maybe all of them depending on how united the French are that year or if there is also fighting in the south. Post-1350, if you force evacuate a village to devastate it and it’s environs for sport, you are pretty much begging for a peasant revolt in France or England.
So you can definitely see how the cost benefit ratio started tilting dramatically 'round about then. Still, they were prestige things and it really did totally make sense to scale down from a more free range pro-football model and switch to a more spectator friendly pro-wrestling model, complete with people deliberately falling off their horses dramatically to let the king or the Prince/Dauphin win.
It was at this point in the development that the Tudors gain control of England. Henry VII in particular was really, really into Arthurian imagery as propaganda to try to reunite England after most of a century of sporadic civil war. He leaned way the fuck in on New Camelot and romanticized chivalric tradition (Instead of the real thing which is not what most people think because Tudor and Victorian imagery overwhelmed earlier models). Like, literally named his oldest son "Arthur" in hopes king Arthur would rule after him. Commissioned a physical round table and did reenactments. Toured the country doping Arthurian themed pageants in major cities. Threw tons of pageantry and imagery laden new style tourneys with one on one jousting Henry VIII was really really really into it. He was raised to be Lancelot or Gawain for hois brother basically. He loved the new pro-wrestler style tourney and doing it when he was way too old to be when he got the serious head injury that basically turned him into a monster for the back half of his reign.
Victorians loved romanticized versions of already romanticized Tudor versions of chivalry and Arthuriana and a lot of our film imagery ends up being Victorian ideas of the Middle Ages. Also, again, way the fuck cheaper.
* That rant in the beginning about how long the Victorian Era was and how much change there was? I swear I’ve got my version of that rant that I have given so many times.... I may have once lost my shit on the internet explaining that no Edwardian and Georgian are not the same. *hangs head* BTW, I think the people imagining all victorians i grey/black is from looking at early photography instead of also growing up with fashion plate reproductions. <.< >.> "Victorian Fashion Is Not What You Think It Is:"

My Grandmother had very large endowments. It was a nightmare for her, because the boyish silhouette was in. She hated the level of binding required and was so glad when that ended. She was still grumpy about it in the ‘90′s.
Meanwhile, my great grandmother, who was shaped like that, thought the loose style instead of tight and structured was the best thing ever.

* Tuesday: It's time for another game of what's wrong with me now! We know it's definitely not covid, which means the odds are I'm not dying this month. There are a range of options as to what's going on with my lungs with at the low end inflation from a month of infection and/or problems relating to one of my meds getting yanked from the market not having been replaced. "And" is more likely as they could definitely be working together and that would explain why it's this bad. I have some meds to try to fix those if they are the problems. At the high end we are talking anti-biotic resistance. In aid of eliminating that as an option or picking a targeted anti-biotic, I need to try to produce a sample tomorrow. I spent all after noon on medical stuff including lung x-rays.
Squirrel is still going to be wearing the mask around the house until we're sure it's not say, lung MRSA.
It is way to hot and somewhat smokey, I need to rest a lot and will likely go to bed very early. I will do what I can in the times I'm upright for hydration, but it's going to be short bursts and quality may vary, especially as my sleep was two naps of about an hour and a half each.
* In related news I think I may have scared the shit out of a nice old lady, but for her own good.
See, I called and tried o get them to tell me the COVID results before I left the house, but they couldn't rouse a nurse before I absolutely had to leave for the doctor's appointment. I always act as if I and/or anyone else i meet is infected, so I'm masked up and I'm super careful on the trip out to the car. double so because I really did think I probably had it today. I though I heard sounds in the atrium, so swung wide for a peek at an angle where I could get maximum distance.
Gods help us all, it was a rather frail looking lady in her 70's or 80's with no mask. Her: It's okay, go past me. Me, in my super calm but firm professional teacher voice, the one you use for active shooter drills and the like, you know, a modified paramedic voice basically: Ma'm, which way are you going. Her, fumbling for her mask: I know I should be wearing it. Me, having retreated out of sight to put the wall between us, still in my active shooter drill voice: Ma'am, I need to know which way you are going so I can get out of your way. I'm likely infected. It's for your own protection. Her, squeaking a little: elevator! Me: Okay, I'm going to move another six feet back down the hallway until you're safe. *elevator noises* Her: I'm in!
I wasn't infected, though she looked frail enough my lungs could still have given her a potentially fatal infection, the same way any lung infection is a risk for me. The politeness socialization that had her trying to get me to pass her could have gotten her killed today and I'd have felt terrible about it.
I worry a lot about things like that.
I hope she remembers next time, for her own sake.
At the x-ray place, I told them that I definitely didn't have Covid, but was likely infectious, so they should sanitize anything I touch. picked a spot in the crowded waiting room as far as i could manage from others, but I had a fear that someone else coming right after me would see a spot as far as possible from others and sit there before they'd cleaned it, since during the long wait I'd seen some chairs reoccupied and most of the people in there were other people and/or disabled. If I'd had a choice, I have sat outside, but there were unmasked smokers and they wouldn't have known to look for me there. If I'd had a choice, I wouldn't be risking more people, but she needed a good look at my lower lobes because it is possible from the too much quiet that something bad is going on there.
X-Ray tech, carefully: so what's going on.
I explained, and he went to sanitize the waiting room while I changed. Safer for everybody, really and they should have been doing it as a precaution like they were when I was there last time, but they were slammed so...
* In other, other news, I was strong enough they decided to give me my influenza shot at the doctor's while I was there.
Please, please, please get your influenza shot this year, even if you don't normally do it. yes, I get a minor injection site rash for a couple days. Yes, I'm tired and vaguely ick for a week, but you know what I'm not? Sick for a month with serious risk of hospitalization. because will get exposed and I will get horribly sick for a monthish if I don't. You know who else might get potentially fatal influenza? Your grandmother. That cashier at the grocery store with underlying health issues. the little kid on the next block with leukemia.
You can get at worse a minor ick of short duration and for healthy people with no allergies, likely not even that; or you can risk getting really sick and maybe killing people.
In normal years peak flu season can full a hospital up. this is not a normal year and lot of hospitals are still packed to the gills with covid. Don't make it worse. suck it up and get the shot. Vaccinate your damned kids.
Save lives.
* Wednesday: I did manage to produce and turn in my sputum sample. It turned into a whole Thing, because I took them at their word when I asked how to turn it in. They said, "Just pull up to curbside and they'll take it." Bwahahaha no. Apparently they were assuming I owned a cell phone which is somehow required to do drop off? IDK. I waved my baggy to attract the lady and it ended up being a half hour drama which at one point involved them trying to talk me into parking and going through screening so I could sit inside the pharmacy for a while in order to hand in my baggy in there. Me: No. You don't want me inside. We don't know what's in this sputum sample. *points to baggy we've been discussing off and on for ten minutes* I could be anti-biotic resistant. At one point she gave in and physically handed me someone else's cell phone in order to negotiate the hand over, which again, they totally told me I could do at curbside yesterday with no mention of a half hour of negotiations and technology I literally don't own. (I reminded her to disinfect the phone after).
He did eventually come out with the clip board and take the sample.
If they had said yesterday, you have to park and go through screening to turn over the sample, I would have don't it, but still refused to go inside because you know, potentially contagious, but that would have been the same amount of work for them, just involving a third person (The screener).
Seriously, I am not trying to be a dick; I am literally just trying not to infect people.
* I am exhausted and not breathing well and my arm and secondary damage areas are terrible today. I am way behind on basic housework because of the several months of arm and a month+ of lung infection stuff. i wish I had help. I feel terrible enough I wish I had someone to take care of me. I know, I know. Adults don't get that.
I am trying to get Tuesday's aggregate posted. I had a ton of things scaffolded before bed, but not posted, hence the news spam at an odd time for tumblr folks. Wednesday's news keeps piling the fuck up, so I gave up and am posting the prepped stuff now or it's not happening, since the wind has shifted again and I can't stop coughing.
Oh, I think about a quarter of the trouble is the wildfire smoke coming in over the mountain, as that's about the difference wind off the bay vs. the alternative makes. It turns out one of the new meds was not in the baggie. There's a national shortage. The fact that I could produce a sample suggests bad stuff is happening in my lungs, so it's definitely not all smoke. What proportion is what outside the smoke issue, I can't guess, but it means I have more time than I thought before things are likely to seriously deteriorate.
