* Some of you my remember that I ordered a case of Tofurkey gravy in September, only to get called in later because we can no longer get that here. The other place I know that used to carry it stopped about half a decade ago. I refuse to check Whole Paycheck. I do not want to encourage them, plus i'm pretty sure it'd be twice as expensive as I was getting a good discount from the coop. So i let them switch my absolutely perfect tofurkey gravy for something cheaper.
Look, I know how to make gravy. I used to make my own back in the before time when I wasn't this sick. It involves a lot of standing up and stirring. Which is, you know, painful. so Gravy i can heat up in a microwave and get like four meals out of was wonderful. The Tourkey gravy had the perfect texture and honestly tasted a bit better than mine. I used to buy a case at beginning of season and one at end and store them in my freezer so i could have things like Boca chick'n and gravy all year round. Omnomnom. No more.
The new gravy is not good. It might as well be broth from a taste and texture perspective, so essentially useless in it's current form. I have a whole case of it. Sigh. It's not bad, just painfully bland and not even close to gravy texture.
So today I got out a saucepan and made roux. I added a whole lot of garlic and nutritional yeast and tossed in some herbs de Provence. Not ideal, but the texture is right and the taste improving. I'll need to tinker with the seasoning. Put a bunch of sage in, that sort of thing. I've stowed it in the fridge for more experimentation. This is way the fuck more work than I wanted to do. The whole point of ready gravy is this is a sandwich I can make quickly when I don't have a lot of leg left, but I need protein. Still I'm not wasting food at least. the mushroom base is fundamentally sound, it just not gravy for some reason.
I wish tofurkey gravy were still a thing. Sigh.
* I got polled today. It was for local city council stuff. It started with a host of important issues, all of which honestly ought to be on the agenda. It then went super granular about a package of aggressive climate change abatement measure designed to shit the small city closer to carbon neutral. honestly, they'd do better if they went heavily subsidized, but I'm not in charge and it sounds really bold even for this deep blue bit of the I-5 corridor. Good on them for trying.
This is why local elections matter, yo! This sort of thing wouldn’t even be contemplated if my local city council weren’t so blue and the local environmental lobby hadn’t organized to fight hard for potable water against the polluting red business interests.
* AHS: While I actually rather like the bold choice to make all the main women characters villains (one not confirmed, but I think her version of her back story is hinky), I am not best pleased that the only two characters of color were a coward and a villain.

* Some of you my remember that I ordered a case of Tofurkey gravy in September, only to get called in later because we can no longer get that here. The other place I know that used to carry it stopped about half a decade ago. I refuse to check Whole Paycheck. I do not want to encourage them, plus i'm pretty sure it'd be twice as expensive as I was getting a good discount from the coop. So i let them switch my absolutely perfect tofurkey gravy for something cheaper.
Look, I know how to make gravy. I used to make my own back in the before time when I wasn't this sick. It involves a lot of standing up and stirring. Which is, you know, painful. so Gravy i can heat up in a microwave and get like four meals out of was wonderful. The Tourkey gravy had the perfect texture and honestly tasted a bit better than mine. I used to buy a case at beginning of season and one at end and store them in my freezer so i could have things like Boca chick'n and gravy all year round. Omnomnom. No more.
The new gravy is not good. It might as well be broth from a taste and texture perspective, so essentially useless in it's current form. I have a whole case of it. Sigh. It's not bad, just painfully bland and not even close to gravy texture.
So today I got out a saucepan and made roux. I added a whole lot of garlic and nutritional yeast and tossed in some herbs de Provence. Not ideal, but the texture is right and the taste improving. I'll need to tinker with the seasoning. Put a bunch of sage in, that sort of thing. I've stowed it in the fridge for more experimentation. This is way the fuck more work than I wanted to do. The whole point of ready gravy is this is a sandwich I can make quickly when I don't have a lot of leg left, but I need protein. Still I'm not wasting food at least. the mushroom base is fundamentally sound, it just not gravy for some reason.
I wish tofurkey gravy were still a thing. Sigh.
* I got polled today. It was for local city council stuff. It started with a host of important issues, all of which honestly ought to be on the agenda. It then went super granular about a package of aggressive climate change abatement measure designed to shit the small city closer to carbon neutral. honestly, they'd do better if they went heavily subsidized, but I'm not in charge and it sounds really bold even for this deep blue bit of the I-5 corridor. Good on them for trying.
This is why local elections matter, yo! This sort of thing wouldn’t even be contemplated if my local city council weren’t so blue and the local environmental lobby hadn’t organized to fight hard for potable water against the polluting red business interests.
* AHS: While I actually rather like the bold choice to make all the main women characters villains (one not confirmed, but I think her version of her back story is hinky), I am not best pleased that the only two characters of color were a coward and a villain.
