This is in line with him using the terrorist bombing attempt on Democratic leaders and news organizations as a threat against anyone who descents. After all, he after Charlottesville he insisted the NAZIs were good people and that those they harmed deserved it and were responsible, and has repeatedly retweeted antisemetic memes to show solidarity with the NAZIs and KKK in the Republican base. Why not do this terrible thing to people mourning the dead of yet another right wing terrorist attack? He hadn't the decency to cancel his hate rally in Illinois the night of the attack itself and used it to demonize and threaten the media. He couldn't stop spewing hate for 12 hours out of respect.

* I finished Storm Before the Storm in the ER waiting room ( and one of my short story things and started another). It was really good: well written, extremely well researched, timely, and doing some things most books like this don't do. I've read quite a few other books on the Late Roman Republic, including a really good one from the turn of this century that focused on Populare and Land Reform, but I've never seen one with this particular focus. Most such books understandably forground the Gracchi, Marius and Sulla, and Julius Caesar. This book wasn't much interest in Ceaser and Pompey at all, and while it very much detailed the events around the Gracchi and Marius and Sulla, it didn't foreground them at the expense of everything else, but rather set them in a wider context and really dug into the details of how the overthrowing of norms and violent factionalism tore the Republic apart. This book is very much written in the context of rising fascism here and abroad, a point alluded to in the Preface, but not in the body of the work. The author trusts to the intelligence of the reader to draw appropriate parallels. It is very readable and non-specialist friendly, though there will be a lot of unfamiliar names to people with limited knowledge of the Republic, but there was a real effort to make it approachable. My one quibble is it would have been really useful if they'd had a better map of Italy in the front for help with the Sulla's last big war.
* I keep thinking about the conversation with the cabbie. He said he was terrified that 45 would start a Nuclear War. I said something like, "I'm not. Either he destroys the world or he doesn't. If he does, then we're all dead anyway fairly soon after. What I'm afraid of is the rising fascism. I am terrified of having to live under that long term, what that will be like."
