* Kavanaugh has vowed that Democrats will "reap the whirlwind" for attempting to hold him accountable for his behavior and went off on wild accusations that a variety of groups he is biased against are secretly in a vast conspiracy against him. How can someone who believes and says these things rule fairly in a court of law on any case involving these groups? Shouldn't that alone be disqualifying? He mostly refused to answer questions from Democrats, choosing instead to berate them and attempt to interrogate them back. He had a really hard time answering questions about alcohol and accused Senator Klobuchar of being an alcoholic for no clear reason. I still consider the perjury by itself to be enough that he ought to be impeached from his current judgeship, but shouldn't the bias, misogyny, and rage issues he displayed also render him unfit? It was the women he was screaming at most and he really didn't seem able to tolerate any questioning from women at all, no matter how politely phrased. Should someone so thin skinned and prone to hysteria be in a position of responsibility of any kind, let alone have a life time appointment on the Supreme Court? I think not. He also pretty clearly committed perjury a bunch of times today, given how clearly his own friends, his year book, his best friend's previously published memoir contradict him. I have trouble believing that pretty much everyone who knew him in High School and College is lying and he is the only one telling the truth. On it's face his statements are absurd, even if he hadn't already committed perjury when testifying under oath on previous occupations.
That thing where he got pinned hard over his claims the FBI don't determine things and to call for an investigation to clear his name was a dark sort of amusing, at least. That thing where Lindsey Graham reclaimed time he'd already ceded to the Prosecutor they hired to go after Dr. Ford so he could give an unhinged rant? Not so much, also the rest of them making pro-Kavanaugh speeches instead of actually questioning him so as to show the whole world just how much of a sham their process is.
I think it is an indictment of the Republicans on the Judicial Committee as human beings that they watched Dr. Ford's testimony all morning and has so little empathy and basic decency that they came back in the afternoon to speechify to Kavanaugh instead of questioning him, claiming that about being questioned about his actions is the worst thing to happen to anyone. They tuned out her trauma and fear to make panegyrics about her attacker.
I am not sure if it's possible to better encapsulate the Republican fury at rape survivors than their decision to throw out all corroborating evidence and witnesses and to have a professional prosecutor question the rape survivor but not her attacker and to substitute praise for the attacker for proper questioning by the same prosecutor.
* Please, please, please if you can manage it, contact your Senators to get them to fight the Kavanaugh nomination. This is geometrically more important if you have a centrist Democrat like Joseph Manchin, Joe Donnelly, Doug Jones, Jon Tester, and Heidi Heitkamp; or Republicans like Tim Scott, Marco Rubio, Bob Corker, Jeff Flake, Susan Collins, or Lisa Murkowski. (For Flake, Corker, Collins, and Murkowski please call for a proper independent investigation by the FBI and a return to normal Senate procedure in cases like this. For Scott and Rubio emphasize Kavanaugh's racism and support for racial profiling, for Collins and Murkowski emphasize the right to chose, the nominee allegedly having attempted to violently rape someone, and the Jane Doe case where he tried to force a raped immigrant teen to carry against her will, With Murowski, you might also mention his opposition to programs benefiting Alaska Natives). Jeff Flake, Susan Collins, and Lisa Murkowski remain the best bets, so keep the pressure on! Contact Chuck Schumer and ask him to whip the Democrats so as to get them to stand in united opposition. It wouldn't hurt to demand your Republican Senators call for a proper FBI Background investigation and return to the normal process used for the Tower and Thomas hearings. They won't, but pressuring them shows them there might be consequences.
Protest in person if you can, but if you can’t, here are some other options:
