* Yes, I know about 45's penis. I very much wish I didn't because it's burned into my brain. NOTE: I really didn't want to know as much as I do about Bill' Clinton's either. EEW! I don't care which party a politician is from; I do not want to know anything about what's in their trousers. Eeew. Also, Eeeew. And it's everywhere now so I really resent being asked to think about it by the news and late night comedians. Did I mention Eeew? Because the whole topic makes me queasy.

* "We’re talking about 35 years ago. I’d hate to ask, have somebody ask me what I did 35 years ago." - Chuck Grassley on Brett Kavanaugh’s attempted rape of Dr. Ford.

This begs the question who is Chuck Grassley implying he tried to rape when he was a 49 year old Senator?

* Please, please, please if you can manage it, contact your Senators to get them to fight the Kavanaugh nomination. This is geometrically more important if you have a centrist Democrat like Joseph Manchin, Joe Donnelly, and Heidi Heitkamp; or Republicans like Tim Scott, Marco Rubio, Susan Collins or Lisa Murkowski. (For Scott and Rubio emphasize Kavanaugh's racism and support for racial profiling, for Collins and Murkowski emphasize the right to chose, the nomminee allegedly having attempted to violently rape someone, and the Jane Doe case where he tried to force a raped immigrant teen to carry against her will, With Murowski, you might also mention his opposition to programs benefiting Alaska Natives). Contact Chuck Schumer and ask him to whip the Democrats so as to get them to stand in united opposition. It wouldn't hurt to demand your Republican Senators call for a proper FBI Background investigation. They won't, but pressuring them shows them there might be consequences. Jeff Flake of Arizona may be weakening! Please, if you are from Arizona, call to tell him to vote against Kavanaugh!

* Is it weird that the Truvada commercial makes me happy every time it comes on?

Bear with me. I was 13 in 1983. There was the horrible wait for them to even find what was causing AIDs that spanned my early adolescence. By the time I was old enough to date, the Plague was in full swing and the deaths came so fast and so often and all they had was AZT. I took my first test at 19 because it was too hard to get tested when I was in High School. I got tested regularly from that point on, always hoping this time wouldn't come up positive. Periodically there'd be coverage of vaccine or drug trials or the quest for the cure, but I made it all the way to Grad School and people just kept dying and dying.

The HIV/AIDS education campaigns back then almost always exclusively targeted affluent cis white men, even though the infection had slowed there and kept going up and up for gay and bisexual people of colour and for trans folk, also particularly trans folk of colour. We were so angry, so many infected and dying needlessly because hardly anyone doing the outreach cared if non white, non-afluent, non-cisfolk died. No matter who complained or how often, it took ages to start the occasional seeing woman or person of colour in the ads, let alone transfolk.

When the new Protease inhibitors turned up in the press, I wanted to hope, but I couldn't trust it at first because there had been so many supposed breakthroughs that didn't pan out. When the combination therapy results started coming in ernest it felt like a miracle. Suddenly, people were living. I'm not sure I can convey what that felt like. not a cure, sure, but something, finally something effective.

Then followed so many years of half assed outreach and the infection rates rising and it felt like people were forgetting everything and nothing was being done towards longer tern solutions even as barebacking trends came and went the long term health and mental health issues with long term survival started to trickle in. Long term survival with a chronic illness controlled by medication is worlds better than dead within a year or two, but it's not good enough. I always wanted a better world for our youth than we had.

Look, PREP isn't a cure either, but damned if cutting infection rates down isn't something important. I would have been on it if it'd been around when I was well enough to date, because even with condoms it's good to be sure. People tend not to be consistent with condom use. We weren't that good at it as a community even when one mistake could literally kill us fairly quickly. It's even harder for people to whom the very worst of the Plague isn't living memory, for whom there's always been a reasonably effective treatment. I am and always have been a fan of harm reduction of all types.

Ever time I see that commercial, I think of all the people who won't get infected, who won't have a higher risk of dementia and depression, who won't mess up once or have a condom break and end up with a chronic illness for life. I think of all the wonderful people who won't die from infections related to this disease.

And it is beautiful to hear the voices of the people in the ad and see that this time, they are for once, trying to reach everybody, that this time someone is talking to the whole community instead of just one segment of it.

It feels like magic, this glimpse of progress when so much else seems to be going backward.

I actually spent a summer in high school working in a lab that was trying to develop an AIDS vaccine. (We were using ribosymes to try to cut the virus between the 'replicate this into their DNA string and the stuff that actually did bad things', it worked in vitro, but not in vivo, if I recall correctly.)This was through a summer student program at City of Hope, they weren't just randomly hiring high school students.

Anyway, the guy whose lab I was working in developed one of the important AIDS tests and has been working on gene therapy treatments. Science... it's important, but it can take forever. And sometimes, what you learn is all the things that /don't/ work.

Sorry. I didn't think you were blaming the scientists. I've been hired as a temp to help my father go through his lab notebooks from more than three decades, get them organized into a database with scans of the table of contents or cover page and links to any published stuff which came from them and then a small subset is going to his new, smaller lab (he's winding down towards retirement and they're going to refurbish the building his current lab is in) while most is going to the warehouse archives because they have a policy of keeping all data, even stuff which isn't ever likely to get used. And there have been so many which basically ended up being 'Oh, yeah, that... that seemed like a good idea, but it didn't end up working.' Anyway, Rossi is the director of the department, so they had some informational stuff about him in a display and I was reading it recently, thus the 'Hey, he developed the more accurate AIDS test' was fresh in my mind.

I have a prescription for Truvada. The bottle (my first) is unopened because I ran into some (unrelated but slightly scary) health problems a month or so ago, so me and my doctor decided to put off me starting it until we get to the bottom of my medical mysteries.
I'm glad PrEP came about, too, but as someone who is, occasionally, on the gay dating apps and has hookups from time to time, I've also seen the ugly consequences of it. Like the syphilis rate in the gay men's community is now the highest it's been in like 30 years. Same thing, I've been told, for herpes and other stuff, too because everybody's refusing to use condoms now, especially if they're on PrEP.
But in theory I do agree with you, that it is a great innovation.
