* Wednesday was extra special. Just before bed, I discovered something had gone terribly tragically wrong in my tumblr image queue at the start of September, which admittedly explained why that's been such a pain lately. I had one of my radicalinsomnia bouts that ate most of my scheduled sleep. I'd finally drifted off under Tavy with an expectation of a two hour nap when the phone rang. I lifted it to find the last half of an automated message about buttons to bush to navigate the phone menu of some mystery organization I assume was in the first half? IDK. Rolled over. Tavy was making biscuits on my butt in anticipation of resettling. Phone rang scaring him off. at least this was a real call from my pharmacy asking questions about meds, which I answered, then told them I'd likely be in in the afternoon, but if not Friday. Changed the alarm to grant me two hours of sleep again. I did manage two hours of low quality sleep before it was time to wrestle myself into clothes and out of bed, which took two hours.
I was watering the plants before leaving when I damaged a leg. Not any leg mind you: the Better Leg. Most of the time a leg goes wrong it's the other one, see, and on a bad day, they both go bad together. I managed to sprain the better leg, which means everything that followed i basically had to do backward of how I usually manage one crutched. That means crutch on the wrong side where my armpit isn't used to taking the weight. That means messenger bag on the wrong hip. That means carrying things with the wrong arm, which hasn't got years of practice of curling burdens up one armed to carry on my head. That means the weight and balance and rhythm of my gait is clumsy and extra painful with the added worry that the other leg will not be able to handle carrying the extra work. I've been disabled a long time. I'm really good at working with the crutch under one arm for safety and support. I am efficient and have a certain amount of grace with it when my legs are working reasonably well. I do not have that with everything switched because i haven't over a decade of practice with it. Two crutches fine. Usual side fine. This? Novice. Plus of course the pain of the sprain and the pain of the on going accute thing I've been dealing with a week or more, plus the regular pain, plus the pain of the wrong armpit taking so much weight, plus the pain of using muscles in ways they aren't used to, plus I wasn't breathing so well. I had to go, you see. We needed milk, potatoes, lettuce, etc., and anyway, I'd invested two hours in getting upright, and I'd lost what little chance at sleep I'd had.
So I went. I looked so alarmingly bad a tiny Ukrainian Grandmother with obvious osteoporosis tried to get me to let her carry my forage gear. <.< >.> Me: I usually just scoot it along the floor. her and the nice central American lady ahead of me: *skeptical look* The nice thing about a cart is it takes a lot more late and hurts less, though I still had the rhythm wrong every time I started moving until the pain of that first step reminded me. It was the first decent forage haul in ages though. So on to the Pharmacy and the excruciating parkingg lot hobble. To the library because I must go every week for the holds or fines happen. To the Coop to try to pick up my bulk order, only my belief that they had not taken the right paperwork was correct, so they hadn't ordered it, though I had proof I paid and the lady remembered me. hobble, hobble, hobble. Try not to curse in front of children because OUCH. Squirrel brought in the food and I managed to get it away, but it was all a special kind of hell. I did not want to leave the sofa after food and lungs, but problems don't solve themselves. I spent an hour sorting out the image queue issue, which was way better than my initial estimate and buys me a little wiggle room.
I just... Ugh. Why must everything be so hard. It was 9:15 when I finished this I still needed to do tonight's tumblr programing and I hadn't touched the news. Sigh.

* I think I figured out the timing on LM wanting the door open. She can hear me moving around with the TV on, doing various household tasks, cooking, doing lung time with the TV on. Sometimes I do things on the internet while food is cooking, or I look things up. That's no when she bangs. I've noticed it's about 10-15 minutes after I settle in to work at my desk. My desk chair has a loud creak. I think she hears me sit and then waits a while to make sure I'm really settled and not jumping up and down every few minutes. My desk is right by her door, and she likes to sit near me while I work, just like she does with Squirrel. Bonus points, there is a chance that the Junior Beasties have settled by then too and they are less likely to rush at her in the excitement of her emergence, though that still happens about half the time. If she bangs to early they are nearly always right there wanting to visit with her and/or squirrel, and that's a bit much. Clever girl. She's been more social the last month than she's been since Hector died, though not as social as when Mache and her brother were. I really hope it's a trend.
* I find people taking Ambien baffling. Oh, I'm a life long insomniac and naturally nocturnal, so I get the desire for prompt sleep. Trust me, I do. Some of my earliest memories from when I was two and three involve insomnia and me trying to entertain myself silently by what little light came through my window at night. t's not the wanting a sleep aid that confuses me, but the willingness to take it in particular, knowing the side effects. I was never a sleep walker, though I dated one once, but I am the sort of person with a long history of talking and moving in my sleep. I hit walls. I sometimes sleep with my eyes open and sometimes the real things around me and the dream mingle. I once punched a lover who was innocently reading next to me square in the face, under the impression he was a certain ex-lover come back to kill me. (The real ex-lover never would have harmed me physically, but I have a long history of dreams where someone I love has been possessed, infected, turned into a vampire, etc., stretching all the was back to my second nightmare when I was three. It's not an abuse thing or anything. It's just how my mind has always worked). He wouldn't believe I was asleep as my eyes were open and he was understandably really upset. I had martial arts training and I hit with perfect aim and not soft either. I've never hurt a cat though I've slept with them in the bed most of my life and this was the only time I've hurt a person in my sleep, but you see my drift.
This is what I am like WITHOUT a drug that makes normal people sleep walk, sleep eat, sleep drive. Now imagine me wandering around without my consciousness, without the filter that I have while waking. Imagine me with access to kitchen knives having a dream about a serial killer or a zombie apocalypse. *shudder* No thanks. For fuckssake, Tuesday night, my character was a sixteen year old trapped in an attic without weapons with an equally fictional cousin about the same age. (I have gobs of cousins and "cousins" RL, but this was one of my dreams with an elaborate backstory, fully realistic sensory input, and a characteristic degree of object persistence.) ( Cu for a depiction of graphic violence: ) They all very much deserved it and it was self defense, trust me on this. Now imagine me having that dream wandering around naked in my apartment complex with my eyes open. No. Nope.
How do people take it and trust that they won't harm themselves or someone else, especially if they have access to a car?

Bonus points, there is a chance that the Junior Beasties have settled by then too and they are less likely to rush at her in the excitement of her emergence, though that still happens about half the time. If she bangs to early they are nearly always right there wanting to visit with her and/or squirrel, and that's a bit much. Clever girl. She's been more social the last month than she's been since Hector died, though not as social as when Mache and her brother were. I really hope it's a trend.
* I find people taking Ambien baffling. Oh, I'm a life long insomniac and naturally nocturnal, so I get the desire for prompt sleep. Trust me, I do. Some of my earliest memories from when I was two and three involve insomnia and me trying to entertain myself silently by what little light came through my window at night. t's not the wanting a sleep aid that confuses me, but the willingness to take it in particular, knowing the side effects. I was never a sleep walker, though I dated one once, but I am the sort of person with a long history of talking and moving in my sleep. I hit walls. I sometimes sleep with my eyes open and sometimes the real things around me and the dream mingle. I once punched a lover who was innocently reading next to me square in the face, under the impression he was a certain ex-lover come back to kill me. (The real ex-lover never would have harmed me physically, but I have a long history of dreams where someone I love has been possessed, infected, turned into a vampire, etc., stretching all the was back to my second nightmare when I was three. It's not an abuse thing or anything. It's just how my mind has always worked). He wouldn't believe I was asleep as my eyes were open and he was understandably really upset. I had martial arts training and I hit with perfect aim and not soft either. I've never hurt a cat though I've slept with them in the bed most of my life and this was the only time I've hurt a person in my sleep, but you see my drift.
This is what I am like WITHOUT a drug that makes normal people sleep walk, sleep eat, sleep drive. Now imagine me wandering around without my consciousness, without the filter that I have while waking. Imagine me with access to kitchen knives having a dream about a serial killer or a zombie apocalypse. *shudder* No thanks. For fuckssake, Tuesday night, my character was a sixteen year old trapped in an attic without weapons with an equally fictional cousin about the same age. (I have gobs of cousins and "cousins" RL, but this was one of my dreams with an elaborate backstory, fully realistic sensory input, and a characteristic degree of object persistence.) ( Cu for a depiction of graphic violence: ) They all very much deserved it and it was self defense, trust me on this. Now imagine me having that dream wandering around naked in my apartment complex with my eyes open. No. Nope.
How do people take it and trust that they won't harm themselves or someone else, especially if they have access to a car?
