* Re: The latest round of firings and controversies over decade old tweets. I'm going to restate my long held position for clarity. It's about Time + Contrition. I'm not going to trust someone who did a shitty thing last week and then pulls the non-apology "sorry you were offended" bullshit. Frankly? Fire their ass. However, if it was literally years ago and they have given a real apology that shows they understand exactly why what they did was wrong, then demonstrated improvement in words and actions in the time between now and then? That is a whole different thing. It's why I can say, I am not at all okay with things Joy Reid and James Gunn said in the past, but I'm cool with them now. We need to leave room for people to improve and learn over time. We all said things we weren't proud of on the Internet a decade ago. If we are decent human beings, we've listened and learned and tried to be better. we need allies and we need to forgive ourselves and each other for not having been 100 percent perfect since the moment we were born. Perfect ideological purity absolutely can't be the standard because no one can meet it.

Time isn't enough on it's own. Real contrition in words and actions are excellent, but I need to see a pattern longer than a week or a month for me to trust you again. The sincere apology that demonstrates empathy and understanding of the harm done though? That's an excellent first step and I'm willing to wait a reasonable amount of time for someone to prove it's not just words before I call for the boycott. That real apology buys the time for you to demonstrate your better understanding.

I am fine with being held to the same standard. I try really fucking hard to keep up with the wider discourse, to think about the ways I am privileged, to try to do better and say better, but I've fucked up and I'm going to fuck up. We all are because we are humans who make mistakes and a lot of things like language and beliefs evolve.

Let's all try to be decent to each other, shall we?
