* 45 took a strong stand against human rights and the Rule of law by pardoning Joe Arpaio. Some suspect it is also a practice attempt for his mass pardoning of his criminal associates.

Just a reminder, Joe Arpaio was going to jail for violating a court order to stop arresting and detaining American Citizens without proof of any crime on the basis of race. 45 did an end run around the usual pardon process to show that he will protect police who decide to arrest and hold people of colour for the crime of having melanin and last names racists don't like.

As in the fabric, so I'm confused for a moment, until I sort it out. Then I start picturing "Captain James Felt" of the Walrus, which quickly devolves into a series of terrible slashy puns. Of course. This really is a good week for imaginary porn parodies.

* Me watching a mediocre archaeology documentary: Well that's not true. I can think of half a dozen proofs this "expert" is wrong of the top of my head in seconds. Not only have I seen plenty of pictures, read a whole book about them once, but I have actually SEEN one in person in the University Museum multiple times both on family visits and periodically on class trips throughout my growing up. I took Skye to see it that time I took him east to meet my family in the mid-90's. If I, a random reasonably educated person with an interest in history, but no training at all in neolithic archaeology or history, know you are wrong about this big obvious common knowledge thing, how can I trust a single thing he is going to say in the approximately hour and a half left of this thing? Does it not caste a doubt on the whole rest of the information in this show?

Me: Spots other, smaller things I know contradict findings I've read about in archaeological press.

Me: That is a mighty big leap on such small evidence.

Me: This is no longer a mediocre Documentary; this is a bad documentary.

Me: Okay, now they are just making things up whole sale and not clearly separating things extremely likely from the evidence from shit they made up about specific circumstances and motives related to events for which we have no archeological evidence. They flat out can't know this because these folks didn't have writing and there was no associated contemporaneous nearby site that was destroyed in a way that would render this kind of information. It's not "re-enacting" if you are selling an historical fiction you made up as a thing that actually happened.

Me: Grinding teeth. This is no longer a documentary; this is bad historical fiction.

Me: Turns it off halfish way through.

...And this is why when I had to show students historical documentaries in class, at the end of period, I'd do corrections based on notes I'd made of inaccuracies I'd spotted or things more recent research had debunked. It was much easier on my nerves and I felt it instilled a healthy skepticism.

It teased me with all this stuff I wanted, and did everything possible to make be feel gross for having been taken in and watched it.
