Jun. 10th, 2017 06:31 pm* White Nationislist/Neo-NAZI UKIP lost all their seats in parliament, but Conservative Theresa May is still PM, so there is reason to think the Tories will go ahead with plans to speed up their murder of disabled people through things like literally starving them to death, etc. as they have promised to do if they won. Think I am exaggerating? Google it. A couple thousand people have died of starvation, suicide, etc. because of current Tory austerity measures targeting disabled people. They have also been insisting terminal patients with less than a month to live are "well enough to work" despite being bedridden and literally dying. Now google "dementia tax." Tories feel disabled people aren't dying fast enough so think rendering them homeless etc. to pay for corporate tax cuts should do the trick.
Anyway, they kept enough seats to forge ahead on the economically disastrous BREXIT. *facepalm* I’m too exhausted to properly delve into coverage out of the UK tonight to see just how bad things are apt to get even for myself, but I’ve been worrying about this for weeks, so looked up the important bits.

* For the record, I rather liked White Queen, despite the occasional problem and thing I disagreed with. White Princess has turned out to be rather a mess and has joined the Tudors in my too many things wrong with it to be good stack, which is a shame, as there are some talented people in the cast who I feel deserved better material. It's extra a shame as it's a really interesting period with a lot of real life people and politics that could have made great watching. The choice to show the York to Tudor transition had a lot of potential, and I've had a lot of thoughts I might not have otherwise had by looking at things from this angle in anticipation of the White Princess premiere, but the show didn't take me where I wanted to go that way. Instead it took me places I emphatically didn't want to got, and like the disappointing Tudors, they forgot that Henry VII was a real person with a personality and a lot of political acumen. His use of propaganda and pageantry to win hearts and minds, his subtlety... I do not recognize this lump of wood on the throne. I have long been of the opinion that Elizabeth I took strongly after her Grandfather personality wise. I can watch White Queen and clearly recognize Margaret Beaufort's personality, so they must know how to write characters, but it's like they did no research into Henry VII, and just dressed a manikin for Lizzie to act around. I accept a certain amount of change and telescoping and inaccuracy. I love both Vikings and the cheese that is the Borgias, even though I can give you a long list of things that are not true and people who are changed, displaced in time, etc..
I am way more forgiving of changes that increase representation. What little we know of RL Micheletto is nothing like show Micheletto, but you will pry my beloved show Micheletto from my cold dead hands. His arc is the most interesting thing in a show full of interesting things. Taking a very minor historical figure and doing this with him? Brilliant. Similarly Ivar likely wasn't "boneless" but a manuscript copying error gave them an excuse to add a character with a serious disability and who am I to argue with that even if sociopath paraplegic is not my idea of positive representation. And this doesn't get into things like messed up geography, Rollo and that siege where Katerina shows her genitals being misplaced in time, Cesaere's lack of disfigurement, etc.. Seriously, I'm not a purist if the art works as art and the characters, period, and events are...I don't know close enough? I will except wiggling around with period contemporary rumors, events in dispute, historical figures about which little is known, combining multiple RL people for obvious narrative reasons, interpretations I don't agree with but which are plausible. Tudors threw out Henry VIII's entire personality though which is a serious fucking problem, him being the main character. I admit to knowing not much about RL Lizzie, especially as compared to people like Margaret Beaufort, Richard III, Henry VII, Margaret of Anjou, Henry VI, etc.. I hadn't realized there WAS a gap there and that I would like to know more about her until I was thinking about White Princess before the premiere. (I DO intend to do something about that eventually, but not right now as I'm three or four years on a private project mostly about early modern France for my own amusement and I have stacks of entirely the wrong research materials stacked all over, many of which are ILL and have to be read before I do anything else.) So I can not state one way or another anything about this Elizabeth vs. the RL one. I can swallow them deciding to make the pretender real, but why can't they show not tell how Kingly he is meant to be instead of making him annoying and rather wooden. I had some serious issues with White Queen Costuming, but White Princess costuming is worse to the point of being constantly distracting instead of just being sporadically distracting. The characters were just frankly more interesting in Queen, whereas I don't really enjoy anyone much in Princess nor is there really anyone to like or root for except maybe the Grandmother hiding out in Burgundy? But she's hardly there. Or maybe the put upon cousin? And the politic are a complete mess. Not moving a few battles or an abbey around (I'm looking at you Borgias and Vikings) or simplifying enough so the viewers have a clue what's going on in a one hour show (ditto), which again, I'm cool with as long as you don't push it too far, but Princess needs an international context to make sense and it doesn't have enough of one to tell the political story they seem to be trying to tell. Yes, they go to Burgundy, and once to Spain (which I'd happily have forgiven for the reason I'm cool with Lion in Winter even though the family Christmas never happened. Lion in Winter gets the Characters right and includes enough politics to make sense, except that depiction of Spain is a complete stereotypey mess and that really didn't seem like Queen Isabella), but You need way more Scotland and France at minimum for the politics to make sense. You pretty much always need France and usually Scotland to make English medieval and Early Modern foreign policy and civil war type things make sense, just like France in that same stretch of about 1200 years needs England, Spain/HRE/various German states depending on period, the low countries, the bits that are often part of France or HRE/German state but sometimes independent, and often Italy. This stuff is entwined. Bits of France are England for a big chunk of time. English nobility was still speaking French centuries after that time a French invasion force conquered them back in 1066. French frequently sends support to Scotland and to various parties in English throne wars. They endlessly inter marry. Once you pull the focus out far enough to be talking about non-English alliances, you kind of need to at least properly sketch in the international context. They don't do it well or coherently in Princess. If they wanted to focus so heavily on the family drama, they needed to draw the characters better, the way they did in Queen. If they want to do politics, they needed to do the politics better. Instead it's all muddled and unfocused and messy in a way that has me glaring angrily at the costumes or wondering why scenes and whole subplots are their if they weren't going to do them properly.
I am told these are adapted out of novels. I had intended to try them after seeing Queen, but now I'm suspecting they aren't worth my time.
