* As someone frequently both embarrassed and depressed by the evilness of my government, I extend my condolences to those of you in Australia, now that it's been revealed that your government is involved in slavery and people smuggling.

* TV Round up: I tried with Johnathon Strange and Mr. Norrell, I really did. i made it through, I think a chapter when it was new. It did not take, though on paper you would think it was up my alley. I gave the show a more serious try, having forced myself to watch the first one. I was partway into the second one and having to wrestle myself still, so I gave up. So that's a no.
I was really looking forward to Dark Matter, and it's watchable, but Killjoys, which I took up mostly on a whim grabbed me much faster and stronger. I love the main character, and though she is saddled with two boring white guys I have trouble telling apart, the first episode really did grab me. I like that both have strong women of colour leaders. I like that both are hinting at a complex sf distopian world without throwing too much into the first episode. I have hopes of both working for me long run. At the same time, Dark Matter went full on with an inscrutable martial artsy Asian stereotype and an archetypical boring asshole white guy in their main cast which makes me wary. On the upside, I keep thinking of Douglas Adams' Grebulons in Mostly harmless and keep waiting for an astrologer to show up to accidentally tell them to blow up Earth , which adds a level of likely unintended suspense.
