Jan. 6th, 2015 11:16 pm* Boka Haram has taken a key military base that had been used by the multinational forces and burned Baga, the last government held city in north Borno State in Nigeria.
* The West African Ebola Outbreak continues. More than 600 health care Workers have contracted the disease in the course of the epidemic, most of them West African. I know the Western Infected are the ones who get the press, but lets take a moment to thunk about the hundreds who have died because they were trying to help their neighbors and community members. They get none of of the glory and the death rate is high. No one air lifts them out when they fall sick. They are heroes and we never get to hear their names or see their faces in the West.
* A Mayor in a small French town has denied permission to a Roma family to bury their baby girl who died Christmas Eve the right to bury their baby. A nearby town has granted them a chance to bury their baby there. Can we take a moment to contemplate the ongoing open racism against Roma in every country in the West? How fucking horrible a human being do you have to be to not let a grieving family bury their baby near where they live? And before we Americans start being all superior, remember that that Roma are the only group in the United states besides trans folk that Emergency rooms consider it ethical to deny life saving treatment to when they are bleeding to death. Just saying. It's nice that President Hollande has condemned this cruelty, but what really needs to happen is for discrimination to stop, particularly when it comes to things like the right to housing with heat and running water which contributes to an unconscionable death rate amoung vulnerable Roma in France.
* When I see large numbers of Germans in Dresden doing an anti-Muslim march with slogans like "Germany for Germans" I am filled with sorrow and alarm. It was incredibly comforting to see so many counter demonstrations around the country protesting racism and xenophobia.
* Things are looking hinky around the AirAsia crash as far as licensing and flight times.
