Aug. 26th, 2011 06:40 pm* They are evacuating 18 counties in North Carolina. Baltimore and DC are officially in a state of emergency. There are storm warnings for Philly. They are begging all folks at the Jersey Shore to get the Hell inland. Mayor Bloomberg of new York says all mass transit is shutting down noon tomorrow and anyone who can move further inland needs to go tonight. The issue is the storm is large and slow moving so it hits an area for a long time instead of blowing through. Connecticut, Delaware, and Massachusetts are also now declared in a state of emergency. Safety inspectors are hard at work all over the earthquake effected areas to check to see if bridges and nuclear reactors are still in a condition to withstand the hurricane. Obvious, flights are cancelled pretty much all over the east coast. The list of placing with flood warnings in place is too long to go through.
Stay safe folks.
* They are not evacuating my mother, trusting the generators to carry them through.
* Don't worry, Republicans are still trying to defund FEMA, the national Weather Service, and any other government organization in the wake of disaster, along with maintenance and infrastructure improvements for things like bridges that might be damaged in earthquakes hurricanes, etc.. After all, it is important that Republican budget policy should never takes facts or reality into consideration, as reality has a well known liberal bias.
* They found a book made up of photos of Condoleezza Rice in Qaddafi's rooms in his compounds. I suspect we are all thinking the same thing. I know I'd feel queasy in her place, but obviously, I have no way to know how she feels about it. I am not one of her fans, but I definitely have empathy for her in this instance. There will be no jokes about it in this space.
* I mistakenly called the brave woman who talked the Loyalist into releasing the hotel hostages a reporter. Further information shows that she was actually a producer for one of the news organizations. She remains impressive and heroic.
* seifaiden weighed in on Arabic pronunciation and romanization in the comments in an earlier entry, and as it5's frankly pretty interesting, I'm linking to the entry so y'all can check it out: http://gwyd.livejournal.com/1160326.html
* I skipped out on swimming as 4-5 hours of sleep isn't enough, especially coupled with that level of pain. The cats have clearly decided Deusabscondum belongs in the clowder. no one hid under the bed and they spent the visit napping, cadging pets, and in Hector's case trying to steal food and climbing on Deusabscodum as if he were furniture. Or me. We had a good time, and I got him to watch my beloved Shortbus, which he had never heard of and took to the way I did.
