* ToS: Season 2 Rewatch:
- 2.12. The Deadly Years: They go to check on an expedition, but everything looks deserted until they discover them dead and dying of old age despite being in their 20's. The Endochrinologists they have in for the investigation is one of kirk's exes, now widowed. Kirk starts repeating himself and his shoulder twinges; a crew woman has trouble with her hearing; Bones is crankier and going grey. Kirk has advanced arthritis; Scotty is suddenly ancient. Soon all of the away team but Chekov are aging. Given Spock's longer natural lifespan one would think it would hit him less, but somehow I doesn't. Kirk's ex was 26 years older than her; she tries to rekindle things; he suspects pity. Kirk is clearly unfit for command, but is stubborn; the area official keeps pushing them to leave. Radiation from a comet tail seems to be the cause. The Official demands an extraordinary competency hearing; the first of the enterprise crew dies from old age. The hearing is humiliating and Spock is forced to prosecute. Kirk does not take being relieved of command well and sees it as a personal betrayal by Spock. Chekov is still fine. They realize the only time Chekov was away from the others was when he found the body. They try adrenaline based on Chekov's fear and old research abandoned when another anti-radiation drug was found. The Romulans attack; Kirk tries to go to the bridge; the official in charge dithers. They give Kirk the experimental shot. He uses the broken code and the Corbonite bluff to scare off the Romulans. Everyone not dead is saved.
- 2.13. Obsession: This is the Star Trek version of Moby Dick. Kirk smells something familiar on a planet and believes it's a gaseous creature that killed his old captain. It comes up behind the red shirts scanning for it and attacks them, taking all their red corpuscles. Two die instantly, they try to save the third, who describes the smell as well. Kirk insists the man isn't confused and that it is a gaseous thing that can change itself to hide from scans. The new security red Shirt is the son of Kirk's first Captain and a friend of the third red shirt who only just died. They go hunting it; it eats some more of them. The son survives the attack and Kirk is really aggro about the questioning, basically accusing him of cowardice, presumably out of guilt over his first encounter with it. He keeps refusing to leave to deliver needed medicine to a colony. He is semi-hysterical as he orders them to keep scanning. Spock asks Bones about obsession and tells him about what happened to Kirk's first ship when he was an ensign. Bones confronts Kirk about his guilt. McCoy and Spock basically threaten to relieve him of command to get him to explain himself. It leaves orbit and they give chase, endangering the ship because the engines can't take it while arguing about if it's intelligent or not. Nurse Chapel tries to tough love/use psychology on the disgraced Ensign. The Ensign returns to the bridge as they start shooting the creature to know effect. It gets into the ship. Spock interrupts command crew bickering with practicality. The thing tends to be out of phase so neither Kirk nor the disgraced ensign were at fault since it wouldn't have mattered how fast they fired. Kirk blows off Spock, so he goes to talk sense to the Ensign. The thing comes through the vent; Spocks kicks out the Ensign and tries to close the vent, but the Ensign damaged it earlier. Luckily Spock is indigestible. Kirk asks the Ensign for his military appraisal of the fighting with the creature, thus getting them both to let go of guilt. The creature leaves, they follow it Home to prevent it spawning by killing it with antimatter. they try to bait a trap with blood, but it eats it too fast. The Ensign tries to sacrifice himself, but Kirk wins. Spock locks on them and they use themselves as bait, beaming out and detonating at the last moment. Bones insults Spock, who saved the day; Kirk tells the ensign about his Dad.
- 2.14. Wolf in the Fold: This one starts with Kirk, Scotty, and Bones ogling a belly dancer. Kirk has arranged for her to come to the table and she promptly leaves with Scotty, the woman being a "prescription" to cure his "total resentment towards women" after a workplace accident. I... have many thoughts and no words. none of them noticed the shady characters leaving just ahead of them. Bones and Kirk head out to a different place in search of women. They hear a scream, find the dancer stabbed and Scotty slumped against a wall. I already hate this one and it's just the cold open. So of course Scotty is investigated as a murderer. Scotty has a concussion and can't remember what happened. The investigator says his fingerprints are on the weapon. The administrator and his wife turn up and the wife is going to use the "empathic contact" to investigate at their house. The Feds want to use a "psycho tricorder" to find out what happened to Scott in the last 24 hours. The knife goes missing and the tech they sent down to do the reading was stabbed. Scotty is unconscious again. The other two who left the cafe before the murder are her Father and ex-fiance. Spock wants to snatch Scotty, but they need the port and Kirk says no. The Empath senses devouring misogyny and then is stabbed. They give in and let the Feds use their tech. The blow to the head was not enough to cause the amnesia, but scotty is also telling the truth about not remembering. Scotty does remember the third murder and something was in his way. Somehow, no one has yet suspected the Investigator who has been resisting using Starfleet tech to investigate this whole time and keeps questioning its validity, even though he had just left the room before the second murder, nor does the administrator's complete lack of emotional response to his wwife's murder strike anyone as odd. Look, I remember perfectly well who did it, but that Administrator's behavior is WEIRD. Anyway, they figure out it is an ancient alien feeding on fear, but Spock say a lot of incredibly sexist things to explain why it prefers to eat women. I really, really hate this episode. They eventually figure out the Investigator is the entity. The entity flees the body and infests the ship. They tranquilize the crew to make it harder for the thing to feed. It keeps trying to scare them. Stoned Sulu is the only thing in this episode I've enjoyed. Anyway, Spock makes the computer calculate pie "to the last digit." It flees the computer into the administrator, and then back into his old body. They transport it into space with the widest possible dispersion.
