Dec. 9th, 2010 03:44 am* I needed micro pellets, so I figured I'd pick up some new breeding material for the platys and guppies. Alas, they'd just got a new set of platys in, so they were quarantined. I ended up getting tetras instead as there are few things as sad as a tetra with no one to school with and I've recently spotted the last tetra tooling about. (You get a discount for multiple tetras, but you don't for platys and guppies. As a result, the school was a bit more expensive than the two platys I was planning for, but a better bargain.) The new guppy is happily exploring the tank and darting after the occasional lady fish. The tetras have explored their tank and are mostly napping, as this is their tank night right now. The lone survivor is out of hiding and mixed with the new fish. I bunged in some fresh eloga to cut down on canibalism. Let's hope it works out.
I still rather need the platys, some suckermopuths, and maybe some cichlids. (I still haven't converted the big tank to cichlids, as I always run out of money before I get there.) I also could rather use a new filter for the thirty. Still, progress.

The idea of urban coyotes fills me with glee. I know, I know, they eat cats and small dogs around here, but this would be a good impetus to keep cats inside where they belong and monitor/walk dogs instead of letting them run.
* Nine lobbyists have already been hired as chief of staff for various Republican freshmen congress folk, many of the tea party folk. I'm not sure what could be more establishment Washington than lobbyists. More proof that their rhetoric was hypocritical.
* I put the wrappings back in the box il_volpe sent, so that the junior beasties could have fun digging them out and wrestling them to submission all over the living room. Oh the fun they are having.

* I can't seem to beat the latest infection. It sounds like the thing that's taking people with normal immune systems up to a month to beat. It's exhausting, but the sort of thing i consider more nuance, than major encumbrance. It messes with my sleep and med schedules, but I'm not drowning in lung fluid, so if I've got to spend a month or two with a pathogen, I'm actually okay with it being this one.
(New readers, I have the charming combination of an autoimmune disease and cf carrier syndrome, which means I'm super vulnerable to infections, particularly of the lungs, and my immune system is way more interested in taking out all that pesky cartilage than in fighting infection. Yes, this is why I walk funny).
* One of those odd little tidbits I picked up back when I was still in academia, is that in Austria, when they outlawed the burning of witches, there was immediately a rash of "vampires," who of course needed burning. Ah, human nature! This is horrible, of course. At the same time, it's a sort of progress, as at least vampires were equal opportunity. (European Witch killing everywhere but Scotland tended to be about killing women. Scotland, inexplicably burned more men than women and there's quite a few historians who would very much like to know why. it's fairly easy to see how greed and misogyny combine everywhere else to single out mostly women, but the psychology of events ion Scotland is a big, fascinating blank). It died out eventually of course. I keep this thing in mind because it's important to remember that simply outlawing something isn't necessarily enough. Often, it's the culture underlying needs to change.

"(I would also like to mention that said search also turned up an article titled, "Use of Mist Nets and Strychnine for Vampire Control in Trinidad." You gotta nip this kind of thing in the bud, or you're going to end up with a nasty vampire infestation. Vampire control is a serious problem that affects us all. I know a lot of people like to get their kids vampires for the holidays, but they get tired of them so fast, you know? "Daddy, the vampire is boring, he just sleeps all day, I want a werewolf." So many vampires end up abandoned in shelters, the kind you see in those sad commercials with the Sarah McLachlan songs and the big sad eyes and the captions that say, "Am I going to get staked today?," or just dumped out on the streets. And then you've just got an out-of-control feral vampire population and nobody wants that. Please, spay and neuter your vampires.)"
