* When John Oliver announced "A Day in the Life of Mr. Bundo, I immediately requested it at my library, knowing there was a good chance we'd buy it, as my library is always looking for children's books with LGBTQIA+ themes and odds are request would be pouring in, this being a very blue sort of town. By the time it would have been reviewed by the library staff, the thing was already sold out, demand having taken Mr. Oliver by surprise. I knew a second printing would take time, plus the inevitable processing time once it arrived. It came Monday, and I red it in the night, when the inevitable insomnia hit after about four hours of sleep.
Jill Twiss has written an excellent children's book, that would feel completely comfortable reading to small children. It has engaging art, and two or three (depending how you count them) messages beyond the obvious that I think are really good for the intended child audience. It also has some little touches well designed to amuse a parent reading it to small children, which I very much appreciated. It also has an ending well turned to lift the morale of adults trying to survive 2018 (and likely 2019-2020).
I am not a parent, but I've read a lot of stories to small children (privately), in pairs and in lass sized groups (professionally), and this is something I'd both be proud to read and enjoy reading to children. I know the idea to do it was intended as an elaborate troll, but I heartily recommend it on it's own merits as a children's book, and the proceeds are going to good causes.
* Back in the '80's my school choir was forced to sing a selection of songs from the The Fantasticks. The choir director was very enthusiastic; we looked at the things with horror. We'd none of us seen or heard of the Musical and the songs were incredibly corny. We hated every second of it. IMDB tells me there was a film version extent, which I've never seen, despite my Mother being very keen on Musicals and my having grown up watching and singing them. I know or knew a host of musicals by heart, as in I used to sing them a Capella with a manager I had for a couple years at a job in my early twenties when we were bored. Like, I am fond of musicals and am not inimical to them as an art form. This is important for what I'm going to say next.
I noticed a Joel Grey version from 1995 playing on the TV the other night, and I watched it and... this is not a good musical. Oh, I get what they were aiming for and the extended stylized underworld/carnival scene was actually vaguely good, as was the obvious romantic undertones between the Joel Grey character and the other father, but the music was as corny as I thought it was back in the '80's as teen, the libretto was as boring and mediocre as it gets, and the heterosexual couple which the thing centered around were as unappealing and as bland as it was possible to make them.
I also really hated the whole stay on your boring farm and settle for the closest human your ageish of the opposite sex regardless of individual lack of merit/attractiveness and give up all your dreams moral makes my teeth grind. I spent a decade waiting to be old enough to leave, and I've never looked back. I am way happier having come out here. I had a decade of waking up every day excited to see what would happen next. I would much rather be stranded here in extreme poverty, than be stranded back there with a whole house which was the choice I made.
Fuck the Fantasticks and it's relentless evangelizing for the loss of hope and desire and the death of dreams! I stand by my choices for all it has cost me! I glad I squeezed every drop I of delight out of my life before my body betrayed me into the life of a semi-hermit! I will take the memory of joy and happiness over never having experienced it at all any day!

Date: 2018-05-02 10:36 am (UTC)Among other things it is... never, ever staged realistically and part of how the movie falls down, honestly is trying to be literal with things. It works, in part, because it's as much about the magic of play - both as children and as theater - as it is about anything else. It's a bare-bones, black-box stage set and a ghost light and props pulled out of a trunk.
The messages to me are not so much 'settle for what you have and never leave' as... appreciate those around you for who and what they are without comparing them to impossible fairytales, or maybe don't fall so in love with your idea of 'how things will be' or the image you've built up in your mind of someone that you can't see what's actually there. Also, recognize that many of the spectacular things in the world have a dark side or a danger to them, and that doesn't mean give up on them, but don't let the glitter blind you to the dirt. Well, and teenagers are melodramatic, but parents are frequently not as wise as they think they are, either.
Anyway, all that said, seriously, do not judge that show by the movie. I own a copy because I went 'wait, there's a movie version?!' and... no, just... no. Most people who love the show will go 'lalalala, I can't hear you' if you mention the movie.
