* There were too many physical inconveniences today, so I only got about two thirds of the required sleep. Sigh. I finished the excellent "The Starlit Wood: New Fairy Tales." For an anthology of that size and diversity of style and topic it was amazing. There were only two i didn't particularly care for and I legitimately loved the rest. Alas, the Rupert Everett novel was unreadable, nowhere near the brilliance of the second autobiography. I sampled both a book on Byzantine Eunuchs and gender construction and a thing on "Mad" Early modern German Princes. (The author is using a period term specifically for it's imprecision because given the givens it's not always possible to tell what's going on this many centuries later using accounts with a completely different set of descriptors for mental illness, eccentricity, etc. and the different cultural norms appertaining to early modern German Princesses and Princes).

Wow, am I glad I spent no money to see the Blade Runner sequel. It is boring and pretty much terrible.

When I went to take books to the Haagan drop the battery was dead again. Something is clearly wrong as a check showed clearly I'd left nothing on that shouldn't have been. Odds are some wire is lose somewhere and I don't see how I'll be able to get it professionally looked at. The car is dying slowly, the failing valve putting a limit on it's life. I am trying not to freak out about what happens when it goes. Squirrel's truck is far too large for me and the breaks are terrifyingly spongy, making a few blocks in moderate saturday afternoon traffic an adrenaline filled adventure that I know will be an accident waiting to happen the day I inevitably need to take it downtown for the Doctor or the like in heavier weekday traffic. Fixing his car to make it drivable will be in the 1500-2000 range when one figures in towing, all new breaks and the electrical issue. One might as well ask for the moon. Sigh.

In any case, we are recharging the battery. My suspicion is that it's not recharging when I drive for whatever reason. Well see how Monday goes. I can't not go to the dentist and the missing filling is causing all sorts of trouble already.

At least I have hyacinths on my desk, fresh cut from the garden.

* Meanwhile, I've been auditioning desk configurations, much to the distress of the Beasties. Livia comes over each evening, groks the new configuration, looks terribly disappointed, but being an easy going Beastie as long as humans doing that freaky walk on the hind legs thing aren't involved, starts auditioning napping spots. I found a reasonably good set up last night from a doing work perspective. Unfortunately, it is not a good one if one doesn't want Tavy sitting on the keys. I am trying the last likely configuration out tonight. So far, it's not as good for work (though better than the other two attempted configurations), but I suspect it will be much better for cats, since it restores Livia's favorite middle of the night nap spot. We'll see how Tavy reacts.

* The first hyacinths. http://gwydionmisha.tumblr.com/post/171983175107/the-first-hyacinths

* I have been craving impossible foods again: A particular type of honey cake from the Ukraine bodega equivalent, that I had a slice of exactly once more than a decade ago. I went back to the place that sold it periodically for years, but I never saw it again. Something about the honey/cream flavor and the particular texture of he thin layers... mmmmm.... The sense memory of it has been haunting my idle moments since January. Fried Green tomatoes and beignet for dessert. Impossible, because the one place I ever saw selling them up here is expensive and the fried green tomatoes were a special spotted once, the first or second Summer they were open and never spotted again when I still had money to eat out now and then. Tonight also, I am wanting the particular heart shaped hippy pizza the Cherry Blossom boy got me the evening of our first Valentine's Day. Sigh. The way my brain works, I find myself having a taste/scent/texture memory of a food and then I need to pin it down. It took a half an hourish to figure out the pizza thing tonight, more than a week back in January to figure out the honey cake. I can go the opposite direction, flicking things I can make based on what's in my kitchen with associated smell/taste/texture through my head until I find something I am willing to eat. Memory is a strange thing.

* The faster laptop has the older operating system. Which means a ridiculous number of automatic updates. Which accumulate while I sleep or work on other things. Last night the first of the 3-4 reboots had 120+ things in it. Tonight A two hour 91 item automatic update ate a good chunk of work time, during which I ate, had a bath, folded laundry, and watched most of the Director's cut of the original Alien. I first saw the theatrical cut when I was nine, and adored it. I've seen it countless times since. The thing I always think as an adult, is that there's a good chance they could have limited casualties to 1-3, depending on how the quarantine worked out if they'd just listened to Ripley instead of dismissing her out of hand. Yes, Ash is working against the group's best interests, but if the captain hadn't reacted emotionally and ignored procedure it would have been a lot harder for Ash to do what he did. Also, how does the ct in cryo-sleep work? Why is it there? I love cats, but it seems like cryo-transporting one is odd. I always find myself at some point pondering the race and gender dynamics, which are messy. I always find myself picking apart the captain's character and comparing/contrasting with Ripley. I am always delighted by the Geiger Aesthetics and the way the effects hold up so many decades later. (Quality analog effects in movies like this and the Thing tend to hold up better than the non-sublte uses of CGI, but still it's impressive.) This time I went in wonder if the more recent additions to the Xenomorph movie cannon had ruined it. Sometimes a particularly execrable later item in a sequence casts doubt on the artistic merit of earlier entries. (I'm looking at you third Dexter book). Prometheus and Covenant were such a Mess, I had concerns. It turned out fine. The original still works, for which I am grateful, even though I hardcore side eye making the only black character a maintenance man.

In related news, as I mentioned before, I hated and resisted "upgrading' to Vista as long as I could get away with it, because Vista was the worst. I clung to the operating system before it until both desktop and laptop died on the grounds that Vista is terrible. I have serious fucking security concerns about Windows ten, but it is otherwise a serious improvement. If the box had more memory, I'd be typing on it instead of the Vista box, but I need a bunch of tabs open for news and MUSHing, so I'm using the 10 for things I can mostly do by mouse. I have to reboot it often, but the reboot is super fast and if I'm not losing important data every reboot I don't mind.

I want to again thank folks who sacrificed to put working computers under my fingers, because it is really isolating to be this disabled and poor without a way to touch the world.
