* So I do the multiple hour fast forward to get to the Skating coverage, and discover the Canadians had pre-emped Team Men's figure Skating in favour of curling, so they only showed Patrick Chan. Fine, I thought. It's early enough to catch the American rebroadcast. which cuts in in the middle of Ice dancing and skips ahead to midway through the Japanese single sake. Fucksake! I have access to coverage from two whole countries, neither of whom bothered to actually broadcast men's figure skating properly. Seriously, WTF!?! There is literally one thing I care about in the Winter Olympics and that's figure skating. Single skating is the most popular part of figure skating, and while I am very pleased I got to see the excellent women's performances, I am furious I didn't get to see what happened with the men. They are refusing to broadcast nearly half of the bit I am here to watch for no obvious reason.

That's weird, my coverage had all the team stuff (though it went a little long, so maybe the cut down for the rebroadcast.) Then again, I also have several different channels recording because a bunch of stuff is off on other channels like NBC Sports Network.

Apparently Canadian rebroadcast had Kolyada and Rippon, so Between three broadcasts I got everything but the Italian, which I can live with. It just shouldn't be this hard.

I can only record two channels at once, and that means all I get is the Olympics if I do Canadian and NBC Primetime both. Usually the Canadians are more reliable than this. (I really like the Johnny weir/Tara Lipinski commentary, but the CBC usually have better world skating coverage and I like the Brenda Irving/Kurt Browning/Carol Lane commentary well enough. It used to be the Canadian telemetry was dramatically easier to read on my TV, but both NBC and CBC decided to change for a format too small to see from the sofa just in time for the Olympics. Sigh). I guess the curling is really big this year? I don't know.

They added a new Curling format - mixed doubles. Teams of one man, one woman, 8 ends. (instead of the usual 4-person teams either all men or all women and 10 ends. There are a couple other minor rule changes.) So it and the skating 'team' competition got pushed out to start ahead of opening ceremonies. I happen to love watching curling, though. (plus, as others have pointed out, it's one of the few not so lethal or likely to injure anyone games at the Winter Olympics.) Basically I think the extra formats for both skating and curling have pushed them into airtime contention. (Which would be a sadness if I did not have allllll the channels and a DVR of much space, because they're my two favorite things at the Winter Olympics. I also tend to enjoy the skiing and snowboarding things which involve trick jumps. I have to be in the right mood for more racing type things.)

I don't understand curling, but I generally watch some of it because it's weirdly...emotionally satisfying? I just resent them pre-empting all of the men's skating except Patrick Chan after doing the skate intro. It seemed a weird choice. Here are our commentators introducing the team event finals. Commercials. Surprise Curling that goes so long they don't have time to show the event they just introed.

They had team in Sochi also, and I do wish the sheduling were more sensible.

I do general watch some of the snow boarding and skiing finals with the trick jumps. It's just that Figure skating I follow every year and I care quite passionately about the single skaters. (I generally root for everyone to have the best skate ever, but I have favorites and there is 40+ years of history for me watching the sport going back to Dorothy Hamill in '76 which is the first Olympics I remember clearly. (I used to follow pairs skating, but lost interest at some point in the early oughts).

For me there is a difference between watching an 1/2 to an hour each of something every four years that I don't mind missing as was the case four years ago, and a thing I specifically look forward to watching and have opinions most of the people involved.

which is not how everyone watches the Olympics I know, but I shouldn't have to piece the competition together out of three different broadcasts.

In other non-Olympic news... I kind of want to respond to the 'What is Theater' video and go 'I see what you did there' to a bunch of stuff, because it is filled with in-jokes that most people watching a 'what is theater' video aren't likely to get. On the other hand, wow did it end up making me want to argue and point out things not addressed and where they were over-simplifying, which of course they were, because 15 minute video vrs. multiple semester-long classes on history of theater, performance theory, Classical theater, Asian theater generally, and Japanese theater specifically is just not going to address all the exceptions and background and arguments I can bring to the table.

Anyway, theater is a syncretic art. It involves multiple things coming together to form something new. And one can do pretty good histories for specific /types/ of theater, but trying to find an origin for /all/ theater is like trying to find that butterfly who created the hurricane - a) not really how it works, and b) almost certainly multiple butterflies and probably a hummingbird or two, maybe even a warm spot in the ocean as well.

Also, we can argue about whether you actually need an audience outside of the actors. (and trust me, we spent a LOT of time arguing in that senior seminar on performance theory. I'm not sure we ever decided whether 'Happenings' count. It's like arguing about what counts as 'art'. Some things definitely /are/, but it gets really difficult to come up with actual definition and rules to exclude things.)

I was very into the in jokes, and generally I watch to argue with crash course in areas where I know what I'm doing, so I strongly sympathize. (You did not want to be sitting near me for the history videos and certain of the lit ones, for example). I do think they work well a intros for people and they are entertaining, so I watch them, but I also argue with the screen.

I completely agree one can't find a point of origin for all theater because traditions vary across culture and time.

That particular one was interesting, but unatifying, and I am interested in your rant. Next time I shall try to remember to ak you for theater origin stories in person. :)

I am sorry I couldn't see you this visit, but I still haven't sorted out the sleep situation and until about Fridayish, I was disgusting and unpleasant to be around. I definately didn't want to infect you with anything, geometrically so right before a con.

Yeah. I missed getting to see you, but I totally understood health issues. I also ended up being weirdly both under and over scheduled. For the first week I was up, I had very little scheduled, but part of that was that I was still sleeping 10 or more hours a day and just enjoying being somewhere I could really relax with cats and no meetings. And then the next week was weirdly over scheduled, but I got down to Olympia to see one of my two best friends from high school and her children whom I haven't seen in way too long, and we had a really good catch-up on all the crazy session.

And I think I've figured out that I really only need one more year of school, possibly less and then I will be finding a way to move up there. (I know I can move in with JT at least temporarily. For that matter, I could likely live in Seanan's basement temporarily, though that would be much more temporarily than living at JT's. And Sarah has said that I could move in with her, but that's down in Olympia. Soooo, I have options, is what I'm saying.)
