* This is what the classic parade looked like. There are no cis women in the parade yet, though there were by the time I was old enough to notice. This was one of the few safe places for drag queens and trans women to appear openly in what was a still a violently homophobic and transphobic city by the time I was old enough to leave it. I often struggle to describe the challenge traditional back pieces pose. They are very heavy and you can see some of them struggling with the winds. Weather postponements are rare as it's hard for working class people to get the extra time off, but when there is a postponement, it's usually for high winds, not cold or snow. There is some as embarrassing as fuck cultural appropriation going on here and there, unfortunately, and though that's still a problem, there's been a lot of improvement and some of the mother Clubs are doing sensitivity training in hopes of fixing it. I think it's a huge help in the earlier portion of the parade that it's been getting more diverse, but fancy Clubs are still very white and prone to doing terrible things periodically. The guys in the one man floats with a bunch of people in costume holding up a massive cape are captains. The captain's capes were eventually banned because some of them got to be the length of a city block and were causing the obvious problems as a result. My dad adored them though, and never forgave them for banning. I suspect my father's life long fascination with drag started with the Mummer's parade. "1958 Mummers Parade:"

* This is a captain's display, hence the looser rules on things like the motor making the steam, the more than three people and the extra dancers. "Mummers Parade 2008 Golden Sunrise Space Oddity 1st Place:"

* When I say individual hand drawn floats, I mean a single person is moving this all the way up the looooong parade route without help or aid of an engine. These things are heavy. Yes, that is a whole other person up on the float he is pulling by himself, though odds are they walked on their own most of the way. Some of these will have small children in them, though, and in those cases they generally ride. "Mummers Parade 2008 Golden Sunrise :"

* So here's where I am physically: I'm feeling significantly less crap and my lungs are almost my average. At the same time, I'm sluggish and foggy and need 10ish hours of sleep and hours and hours of bed rest on top of that to function. Clearly, something is still not right. I've also been falling down on phone bureaucracy and keep forgetting to get my routine bloodwork. I still haven't prepped and posted the auction I need to cover this month's bills (they called three times over the weekend), let alone gathered anything like enough to sell to cover property taxes which are coming up. Ugh. So I'm well enough to cover subsistence basics (dressing myself, cat and fish food and maintenance, feeding and bathing myself, etc.) but I'm falling down on shit that also needs doing urgently but is not immediate core survival for me and the plants and animals in my care. I want to make absolutely clear that the cats, the fish, and I are eating. I know some people worry.

It is very annoying, whatever slow burning ick this is. It's also why I haven't even tried to do archaeology/history news this month. It's taking me a lot longer to handle the routine things going on in the world articles and the like. I did very nearly catch up this weekend, but that'll be out the window when I wake up tomorrow. I want to apologize for not being up to my usual standards this month. It's not that I'm not trying, but I need to spend most of the day lying still.

The ick going around this year has a particularly long recovery time which requires a lot of extra sleep. I'm on week three of needing 10+ hours of sleep a day. I had several days of 14+ hours of sleep. and more in which I wasn't /asleep/, but I was only kind of awake and had a really hard time focusing on anything. (This also hasn't been helped by a round of sinus headaches bad enough that I was actually unable to focus my vision enough to read.) Anyway, other people have reported the general exhaustion and needing to sleep way more than usual. so you're not imagining it, it's not just you, and it may not be something else wrong, just the way this particular ick goes.
