* Today I watched a C-SPAN recording of a Folger lecture on Shakespeare. I'll be mulling the lecture for a while, but given the location and subject matter, I couldn't help thinking of my time as a Philosophy monk. Winter's Tale, in particular always reminds me of the "Tutor" (Johnnie for Prof.) I had when we were studying it. Though I went to a number of productions in the Folgers Theater it is particularly Begger's Opera and As You Like It I associate with it, for a variety of reasons, as well as the Boy from Bethesda, who was my lover Spring of freshman year. All of this is a massive web of narrative, associations, and sense memory for me, too big and complex to get my head around at once.
I remembered so clearly the banister in front of the place we generally sat, and when they pulled back to show the audience, it was of the far side, not quite my angle, but very familiar. They did eventually pan the other way, and I could see my old seating section. The stage is so much smaller than I remember, though I was full grown when I sat in that room. In my head, the set for the Beggar's Opera seems massive and complex and exciting. I have read the play since, though never seen it. The starkness of the set behind the speaker and the smallness of the stage compared to my memory of it is such a strange thing when my scale and the design of the side seating is so spot on exact with my mental image.
Brains are weird.

* Snerk. Dick Cavett asked Micheal Caine about how he "lost his innocence." Michael Caine winged the question right back at him and leaned hard. Good for him. It was rude when he asked Betty Davis about losing her virginity too.
(Look, I will tell bits of the story when asked, but I also have no shame at all and I still obscure certain details even though no way does anyone I know know this guy, as the story does not reflect well on anyone involved. It's not funny or entertaining, so it rarely comes up. There is a difference between things one chooses to say in the context of friends discussing first times and aggressively questioning a stranger on National Television.)
In other news, wow, this interview is sexist and creepy on both sides.

* Dick Cavett Observation: The ones I've seen before are all from earlier in his career ending in maybe the beginning of the '80's. The thing I am noticing when they show an occasional interview from the '90's is how much more he talks. He did tell the occasional story in the old ones and there are the classic opening monologues most talk show hosts do still, but the focus was more on the subject. The little stories were short and mostly designed to introduce the guest, briefly prime the guest, set up a story the guest was likely to tell, or involved some past interaction with the guest. Most of his half of the conversations were things that were prone to keep the guest talking or steer towards new areas of interest. I'm noticing he's much longer winded in the later ones, more prone to ramble, things are more about him than they used to be, though he never descends to James Lipton levels of self indulgence as far as I've noticed. It's a subtle thing. Likely a slow shift from being primarily a particular sort of setting for a gem to being a full conversational partner.
