I love the physical comfort aspects, like having a cat to pet while I read, work on the computer and watch TV. I love lieing in bed with the clowder all around and on me, the little sighs, the diminutive snores. I find them pleasing to the eye and to the touch. I love the scent of their musk. I like training them.
With cats, you have to earn the love, loyalty, and respect. Once you have that, they are intensely loyal, but that's an earned relationship, not automatic. I enjoy wathing their politics. I prefer low key affection and quiet companionship to the barking, jumping about, and excessive effusion of dogs. I have been fond of various well trained dogs over the years, but the barking, the jumping up and clawing my legs, and the smell of their fur is really intense for me. Cats are the right level of intense most of the time, if that makes any sense.
I'm okay with boundary pushing whether with cats or Middle Schoolers, which is part of why I'm good with both. I accept it as part of their nature. I am good at drawing and maintaining boundaries and good at pushing back with the minimum required force to reestablish rules. I think this aspect of cats (and middle schoolers) bothers some people who like things simpler. I appreciate the challenge, which keeps things dynamic.
