Sep. 25th, 2012 06:43 am* Now Taiwan is weighing in on those uninhabited islands, sending fishing vessels with armed escort, which have been turned back by the Japanese Coast Guard. I'm still not taking sides as it sounds like the legal rights and wrongs are tangled, and China, Japan, and Taiwan all have claims. Why do they care? The islands come with all the resources, including fishing rights, but also, there's reason to think this is proxy for larger and deeper issues.

* It's looking like the ECB is going to buy up the bonds from the governments with economies crippled by austerity measures over Germany's objections. Finally! Yes, it will increase inflation, but it's currently the best chance to kick start the economies experiencing Depression or Double Dip Recession with no end in sight. Germany favours making the situation worse by even more extreme austerity measures as they don't care if the rest of Europe is set back for generations as long as prices in Germany stay low. Luckily the European Central Bank can move independently. Yes, I get that Germany will be paying for a lot of this but sometimes, you have to take one for the team and in the long run everybody will be much better off if the global economic crisis ends.

Date: 2012-09-25 11:49 pm (UTC)China is historically very protective of the integrity of what it sees as the country's traditional territory, hence the invasion of Tibet, insistence on the return of Macao and Hong Kong, and Beijing's desire to bring Taiwan back into the fold (the flip side of this is that they harbour few territorial ambitions beyond this - they have no interest in Korea, for instance). They consider these islands as part of China, so want them back.
Since Taiwan considers itself to be the true China, Taipei has the same sort of attitude.
