Aug. 29th, 2012 04:18 am* Assad has turned down UN proposals for a buffer zone or safe haven for civilians. He is characterizing his war against his own people as being a "global struggle" somehow. It's looking like Aleppo is mostly in Opposition control, but Damascus is mostly in government hands.
* Wild fires are blazing across the Balkans. Russia's donated a couple fire fighting planes to Serbia. A huge portion of National forest is burning in Croatia and another section by the coast despite soldiers joining fir fighters in an attempt to stop it. It is thought many o the fires have been deliberately set.
* Hurricane Isaac was hitting the Gulf Coast as I wrote this, seven years to the day from Katrina's land fall. Isaac is category one, so it's hoped that things will go better this time.

* Why no real Convention stuff in this blog? Because I find the Conventions, regardless of party, deadly dull, and I'm catching up on my taped stuff instead. If something egregious occurs, I'm sure it'll turn up on the news. Honestly, I'm a lot more worried about folks on the Gulf coast facing a hurricane than who is going to make what speech in Tampa.

* I dreamed of an earthquake and woke to the painters shaking my window. The blue on my building is completely finished. My windows are still plasticed and thus translucent rather than transparent. This would have been gruesome last week when it was still summer, but we are in early autumn now, so it's irritating, but bearable not to be able to open a window. The trim is up to the section of building facing our stairs, so I expect them to be stomping about the patio tomorrow. They have already killed most of my garden, so I'm not moving it again, in the hopes of saving a few things. The tomato plants that were so healthy a month ago are dead or dying along with so much else. The building looks nice though. It did need new paint and this is the first place I've lived where repainting didn't mean replacing a perfectly nice colour with an ugly one. I'm a bit bummed that the new trim is an off white instead of a sharper white, as the old trim is a prettier contrast with the blue. Sigh. Hector's been escalating the last couple days, but weirdly, wasn't bothered by the painters as far as I can tell.
